My Carrick on Suir family tree has come to a dead end. I am looking for the marriage and/or birth cert of Jeremiah Lynch. He was married to Catherine Doherty. I cant trace the family past him. Their son Thomas Aloysius Lynch was born in 1866/died 1935.

Jeremiah Lynch-was born in 1815. He was employed as a Letter-press printer in 1856. He was employed as a Kickham St, Printer (Typo), in 1889 in Carrick on Suir(Bassett's Directory 1889), Co Tipperary. He married Catherine Doherty and had the following children: Thomas Aloysius Lynch (also a printer)was born on 02 January 1866 in Carrick on Suir and Agnes Lynch was born on 21 January 1868 died in 1893 in Carrick on Suir, Co Tipperary. I found, on Google Patrick Lynch (1757-1830?) who set up the first Print works in Carrick on Suir, I assume there is some relationship but have no certain proof as I can not trace further back than Jeremiah.

  • Hi Joanne,

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) https://familysearch.org/. Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Church records may be of assistance to you. Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870 are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.

Roman Catholic registers for Carrick-on-Suir date to as early as 1784 and some are available from the National Library of Ireland. Information regarding the collection can be found here: http://www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx  If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

I wish you the best of luck in your search.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

  • Hi,

Thanks for that, but most, if not all, of those avenues have been explored already. Is there anyone in Carrick that could do a birth record check in the Catholic churches for Jeremiah?

  • Hi Joanne,

You could try to contact the local clergy for assistance in locating the records. You can find a link to the contact info here: http://www.waterfordlismore.com/2007/11/parishes/
