  • I have some info on mahonys of Glencunna.  My husband's grandmother was Catherine - sisters were Margaret ,Mary, Bridget, Julia, Ellen and brother David ( david born July 24,1876) Their mother was Julia Kelleher and father was John Mahony.  I am trying to find out about the family farm - where it is, what size etc - also if any of the mahonys still own it    Thanks Marie Norton

Hello Marie  thank you for replying  I had forgotten about my post asking for information.   Your husbands grandmother is the sister of Mary Mahony who married in 1953 and became Maureen Hawkett.  Mary Mahiny came to London with her sisters Catherine  Ellen and another whose name I cannot remember.  They came to London in 1935.  It is a very long story, well documented and verified that Mary had a relationship with a Peter Gorman and had a child in August 1937, who was later adopted.  My husband Peter Michael.  We have no idea whether her sisters knew or not.  Peter Gorman left the country before she was able to tell him.  Very different times.   We are in touch with Maureen's niece and nephew in Ireland., David and MaryEllem Mahony....the children of Mayreens older brother Michael who emigrated to Boston.  Hope this information hasn't shocked you but it!s pretty old now and we have just recorded it for our growing family to have in the future.  It was Peter's take to tell....all ll the best   Feel free to contact us and u can let you have any information   Peter and Eileen Salt    Ps  we were told about an Aunt Kit!

Hello Marie.  You will have read my reply.  I have maybe confused the generations but it is the same family.  The parents of our Mary Mahony (born Glennacunna Oct 1916) were David and Ellen.  David was therefore the brother of your Catherine....... Sorry.  So many of them!!! Regards Eileen

Hi Eileen - This is all very confusing!!!  My Mahonys lived at the farm in Glencunna in the 1870s. Margaret,Mary,Catherine Bridget and Julia all came over to Boston Mass and married here  All of them were born in the 1870s.  The 1901 census for Ireland shows at least some of them at home.  There was only one son,David, who inherited the farm and I believe he shows up at the same house in the 1911 Census.  There was no Michael. I am sure there is a crossover somewhere here but I cannot see it.  Problem is they all used the same names Let me know if you make any progress?  Thanks Marie

  • Hello Marie  yes indeed the generations used the same names   David Mahony was in the 1911 census living at Genacunna with wife Eleen and the first few of their eventual twelve children.   When Davud and Ellen died their oldest son John took over the tenancy.  The others had to leave.  Some went to the States   Mary Mahony came to London with a couple of her sisters then it is as I detailed..........  Hope this sorts the confusion.   We have been in quite a journey as you can imagine...... My husbands tale to tell and we are amazed at how far we!ve come....  Let us know if you would like to share any other information   Regards Eikeen  Ps Michael was my husband!s uncle...we recently met his son and daughter in law in Ireland

  •  Dear Eileen  Thank you so much for clearing this up and for all the wonderful information.  I am amazed that we knew nothing about David's son emigrating to Boston. I can tell you that Margaret and Mary (David's sisters) married 2 Daley brothers from Cork- one was a professor at Yale University and the other was a Dentist ( a long way from the farm!!!)  Catherine ( my husband's grandmother) married a David Duggan who came from Araglen  - had 3 children Catherine,John and Margaret( my huband's mother)  Does Michael's children David and Maryellen still live in Glenacunna.  Would be nice to know the farm stayed in the family.  Do you know where the farm is in Glenacunna?  My husband and I have visited Ireland a couple of times and we got to Ballyporeen but we didn't have access to all of this info.  We spent most of our times in Spiddal in Galway where his paternal grandfather and grandmother were born.  Thanks once again.  We live in Greenwich Connecticut in the USA so if you ever find your way over here you can depend on a bed!!     Marie

Hi Marie....if you can let me have an email address we have a couple of pictures of Ballyporeen where we went last Seotember.  Glad we sorted the generations. Your husband and mine share a great grandfather?  Think rpthat makes them third cousins,   We are on Facebook and you can see my husband on there.  Do please join us.  Search. Eileen Salt.  Peter looks so much like his mother Mary who did go on to eventually marry a widower with a readymade family but had no more children of her own.  She looked after Peter for two months before handing him over...  A sad tale that belongs to very different times.  Mary will never have forgotten her son....her loss was Peters adoptive mother!s gain I guess.......    Anyway to do join us on Facebook..   We are off to Italy next week in search of Autumn sunshine and then will be visiting our grandchildren Barnaby and Toby in Cirencester.   All the best...great to be in touch......  Ps  we did visit the graveyard in Ballyporeen and saw some Mahony graves..... Thorpe farm was some way away and quite isolated we hear.

Look forward to seeing you on Facebook and/or receiving your email   Mine is eikeensalt@yahoo.co.uk   Eileen
