I am searching for my GGGgrandparents, John Colclough of Clonmell and Catherine Wall,  Wells, County Carlow.  They were married on 25 Feb 1818.  I have no records for John except the marriage record which states he was "of Clonmell Parish.  It is presumed Catherine Wall was the daughter of Dowling Wall and Sarah Payne both of County Carlow, Parish of Wells. I have not been able to locate a birth record for Catherine, but have for her 14 siblings. Catherine could have been baptised under the name Emma (b: 1797) or Hannah (b:1798).

John Colclough and Catherine had one child, my GGgrandmother, Sarah Catherine Colclough, b: 1 Feb 1819. Baptismal record found.  Sarah Catherine married James T. Hutchinson b: 1802,  ? Ireland 1 Sep 1836.  They imigrated to Ontario Canada in 1837. James Hutchinson was a Weslyan Missionary and COC Priest. They had 12 children.

I am searching for any birth, death and residence records for John Colclough (b: circa 1780-90) in Tipperary and/or other areas and for Catherine Wall, her parents Dowling Wall and Sarah Payne, Wells Parish, Carlow.

If there is any information about Colclough/Wall family which can help me find me my Irish family roots I would be thrilled to hear from you.

First and 3rd last look the same.

Perhaps he was born in Kilkenny and the family moved to Tipperary where he spent most of his early life?

  • Col,  thank you for the information.  I would agree with you #1 and #3 appear to be the same person.  I will continue searching for a connection in both Kilkenny and Tipperary.

Was it standard procedure for priests to list the birth place or the place of residence when completing the church marriage record.  I have another ancestor listed on his marriage record as being from St. Nicholas, Galway and yet have found no birth records for him there as of yet.   So as you suggest that information could be current residence as opposed to place of birth as I have thought.

Again, thank you for your help.  Anne

  • I'm afraid i can't answer the question about residence v birthplace but the records use address which implies current residence. However whether they did this with any accuracy (if at all) is impossible to say - all part of the frustration of tracing Irish ancestry!!
