Hi.  Looking for my ancestor Denis Hynes, who was apparently born in the Parish of Terryglass, and who later in life added Hogan as a middle name in the elctoral roles and which name was occasionally used by his daughters and son when stating Denis' name on important occasions, e.g. their marriage documents.

It is possible he may have been living in Nenagh, Tipperary, in about 1825 or earlier.  So there could be a connection with the Hogans, and/or the Cahalan family or the Flannery family.

Hynes and Hogan are common names in this area I think, but if anyone has any idea would be grateful to hear your thoughts.

Thanks

Maureen Hynes

  • Hi Maureen,

Just became aware of your posing regarding Denis Hynes, while Hogan Cahalan and Flannery would be very common names in the Terryglass area the surname Hynes would not neccessary be so

But over years of searching we have found numerous names wwhich were common in the past have completly dissapeared.

Do you have any idea around what year he may have emigrated and where did he emigrate to.

Will get back to you as soon as we locate any information

  • Hi Bill, thanks for your reply. Denis left Nenagh in 1825 and joined the Scottish 75th Regiment and was posted to South Africa for some time. He returned to Ireland in 1844 and went to the Clonmel region where he married Elizabeth O'Neill, had 3 daughters, Ann, Mary and Elizabeth, and then in Jan 1852 the family emigrated to New Zealand on the ship Inchinnan. I am descended from their youngest child, Michael Hynes, born in NZ. Any help or suggestions with locating his forbears would be appreciated. Regards, Maureen Hynes

In the RootsIreland site, it shows the witnesses as Patrick meehan and Bridget Meighan.

Anna was Baptised on the 13th April 1845  (Denis has his name in Latin Dionysos)  From that page you should be able to get the next children. Only Anna is listed in the RootsIreland site.

This is the main link to the site, you can search for other Parishes.

In the Tithe records the nearest Hynes to Terryglass is in the townland of Liscernane, Parish of Lorrha.
You would need to know his fathers name to get any results, I don't think you have this.

Civil records for deaths are from 1864, some are on line with an image.

Just spotted this.......from the ship information

    Hynes

    • Denis 43 Private 75th Reg.
    • Elizabeth 27
    • Anne 7
    • Mary 3 Died at sea 20th Mar

If he was born in 1809....there is one. .............2nd entry for the 15th January 1809. .........I am not saying it is him but it is the nearest birth record.

Scotlands' People site would give more information on his Military records.

    Just thinking....I looked for Elizabeth Neale's birth 1825 + and -
    There is one.  In Clonmel
Send me an email and I will send you the records, ok.

    Cheers

  • Hi Maureen

In my records I have a Denis Hogan who married Bridget Tuiney. I assume they were both born in the early 1800’s as they had a son Michael Hogan born in Inagh, County Clare, Ireland in 1827 and who died in Yeppoon, Queensland, Australia in 1893.

My late Hogan aunt married a John Hynes whose ancestors came from County Roscommon.

Happy to provide further information if required.
