Hello, I am looking for anything about William Smith, born about 1815? or so. He married Rachel Shaw, on March 16, 1837 and had a son named Robert Alexander, Jan.3, 1846. I know Robert came to Canada, but have not had any luck with either William or Rachel's families from ealier times.

Have you already had a look on Rootsireland,ie to see if you can find any information about the family? As you probably know Smith is a pretty common name, as you can see from the link below:

As you know the parish, the search can be focused, the RC records for Modreeny (RC Parish of Cloughjordan) begin in August 1833 so unless he and Rachel married in another parish there will be no marriage record there.
