Hello! My great grandmother, Norah Leahy, was born in 1872 in County Tipperary- just do not know the parish.  Parents Johanna Kelleher and James Leahy had 4 daughters (Alice 1866/Margaret 1870/Bridget 1873/Norah 1874) and PERHAPS a son, James. The daughters all went to New York, USA.
How do I know which parish in Tipperary holds their information?
Thank you!

Ann Marie

I couldn't find the parents' marriage or the kids' baptisms.

I assume you know to go to http://registers.nli.ie/ & trawl through Ardfinnan

    Happy hunting!

  • Thank you, Col and Tom!   You have given me great resources to continue the search.

The Aunts of my grandfather (Alice, Margaret, Bridget) and his mother, Norah, had birth years determined by their death certificates in USA.  I know dates can be very loosely recalled.......and many folks were not too clear about their actual age.......
So, used their death certificates to determine consistencies with parent names (one spelled Kelleher as Colohan for mother, Johanna; all had James Leahy as the father).

The only reason I seek a James Leahy who may have STAYED in Tipperary is that my grandfather was told his Uncle Jim returned to Ireland......That COULD have been a story his mother made for an Uncle Jim from her husband's family who died when my grandfather was a boy....(instead of going to heaven he returned to Ireland?).  Do not know the truth right now!

Thank you for the words of encouragement!  Grandfather also told us of dances in Clonmel that his parents attended.....perhaps they met there....because he was John Joseph Powers of Waterford (try finding THAT one- hahaha)!

Will keep this message board on my list and continue searching!

Thank you- have a great day!

  • Time is coming to PLAN the visit!  Looking at September 2016. Will follow the leads to visit the churches/lands on which the Leahy's may have lived.  Do you have any suggestions on how to find the final resting place for their parents???

Not sure what year they died- had to be after 1872 (last year of childbirth).....and their names were James Leahy and Johanna Kelleher/Kelehan Leahy.
Would LOVE to find their final resting place and honor it with erection of a stone (since I am assuming there was no one to do that when they passed)........unless their Thomas lived to adulthood......we did not know about him at all.......
We did know  Alice, Margaret, Norah and Bridget because they came to the USA in 1870s or 1880s.

Thank You ALL for such wonderful information!!  Do you have an office we can visit in Tipperary area?  Mom and I would be thrilled to make a connection!

    Most sincerely,

    Ann Marie Bridget Lynch

  • WOW!!  SO glad to get this information, Tom.  I suppose it is possible that there are LIVING relatives in Tipperary- a real surprise!

Our journey is next week! We plan two nights at the Clonmel Park Hotel on Cahir Road. We hope to see the Waterford County Museum (Dungarvan) AND the Tipperary South Museum on Friday, the 23rd.  We saved the 24th to look around the cemeteries/churches/pubs of Tipperary area- following the many leads you have shared with us.  Is is possible to get together on the 24th?

  • Good morning, Tom!  We are looking forward to meeting you on the 24th!

Discussed the options with Mom and my brother- and we agree that getting an early start is best :-)

We would like to see the areas where the Leahys/Kellehers lived and worked and died........and the Grange church (I might have a post card/photo of it- see attached).

Have printed google maps for some of the areas/churches/cemeteries....but would LOVE it if you could be with us to guide us. We are not sure how much territory we hope to cover- it all looks so close on the map....and all within a small area of the county....but you might know better about such.

Can we pick you up? or meet you some place?  Would take you to a meal along the way, for sure!  We have rented a car that would fit 4 or 5 people.  And we are staying those two nights in Clonmel.

We are SO pleased that you would consider doing this on behalf of the Ireland Reaching Out Project!!  Cannot begin to thank you enough- and hope they are reading this email!

We leave New York on Monday evening, the 19th. Hope we can make the plans before we leave (will rely on WiFi during our few days in Ireland).

    Thank You!!!

  • WOW!  Thank you for this information, Tom!  I am looking at it again this week (as I have a few hours of free time and there is prediction for some snow).

Seems to be a match for this family!

Mom still talks to her Hibernian friends about the wonderful experience of meeting you and Joe and seeing those traces from the past on the hills of Rossmore!  She talks about returning next year!

Best wishes for a Merry Christmas!!

  • Oh WOW!!!  What things you have found!!

Thank you for taking the chance of home dissonance to share such a wonderful Christmas gift with our family!!  Mom is going to be sooooo happy and grateful (as I am, for sure)!

The map grid references are such a help!  The closeness of the county borders explain a lot with the connectedness of the various families!

To imagine that Joe might have connection with our ancestors is just incredible- and begs for the planning of another excursion across the pond!!

Please thank your family for donating you- and we thank YOU so much for the time and work you have generously given to our family.  Is there anyone at the main offices of Ireland Reaching Out who would be interested in this incredible story????  I think it is noteworthy!!  Could be a project for them for the winter months- to compose the facts into the story we think is so fantastic.....?

All our best from the New York and Oregon family you have so thoughtfully nourished and energized with your work!

Merry Christmas to you and your family!!
