Hi All

First time to this forum so apologies in advance for any flaws in my protocol.

I am looking for the families of Robert Fraser/Frazer Somers/Sommers & Phebe/Phoebe Letitia Jackson.  Robert and Phebe were married by licence in the parish church by curate on 29 Mar 1880.  From what I have been advised this means the Church of Ireland.

Robert & Phebe had at least one child before emigrating to Australia namely Florence Ethel Somers born 27 Feb 1884.  On Robert's death certificate is stated that they lost one daughter but no date given as to when this daughter died.  However given the apparent first was born in February 1884 and the couple married in 1880 it may well be the first child was a female who was the first born child but this is just supposition.

On Robert & Phebe's marriage record [both full age] is stated the following:

*Robert - draper of Aston's Quay Dublin

*Robert's father - Mortimer Sommers Hotel Keeper [no address provided]

*Phoebe Jackson - spinster of The Mall Roscrea

*Phoebe's father - Robert Jackson farmer [no address supplied]

*Witnesses - John Bennet & Charlotte England

Phoebe & Robert's first [surviving?] child was Florence Ethel born 27 Feb 1884 at Roscrea.

On Roberts death certificate, his & Phoebe's youngest son Walter Fraser stated that his grandfather was called Brownrigg Somers and grandmother Eliza Fraser.

There is a record for a Mortimer Brownrigg Somers leaving Ireland for New York arriving on 27 Aug 1849 aged 28 years born about 1821.  Other than the name I have no link whatsoever between the father of Robert [Mortimer Somers/Brownrigg Somers] & this person Mortimer Brownrigg Somers although it is probable there is a connection as yet unidentified.

Any information will be much appreciated.

  • Hello Eamon

Have been dealing with a broken ankle so not up to speed as yet.  Your post is much appreciated. As to St Cronans - I did establish contact with a wonderful person who, from memory, had access to the burial records and we started contact.  The day I broke my ankle was the day I started a reply email that I saved as a draft.  By the time I returned to the email after 2 weeks in hospital, the email address bounced.  I tried again but no luck and for the life of me I cannot work out how to make contact again.

Too much medication and too long between emails.  However your post gives me hope.

I have just begun reading the webpage you have provided and whilst this is possibly grasping at straws I did notice some of the names particularly the name Frederick.  This was a name given to one of the sons and also to my partner whose family I am researching.  Having spent a wee while researching I do know some names come down lines.  For example my fathers middle name was 'Musgrave'.  Before I started my family history I did not know how significant that name was to become in my research and I have now traced it back to Wales in 1665. It went down the line from then to now - most amazing.

Do you have an email address for the curator at St Cronan's?  I am in Australia and an email address would help enormously.

    Warm regards

    Marie
