I'm trying researching my great grandfather Bernard O'Neill. I would like to know if he was a free settler to Australia or transported as a  felon he was said to be 104 when he died in Picton, NSW, Australia in 1896.  He married Mary Ryan in Picton in 1862. Mary and Bernard had 7 children, on early paperwork they are registered as Neil and then later O'Neill.

His gravesite and headstone has been lost so I can't find details there and the details on his death certificate do not state his parents names.

His daughter Eliza's birth certificate states that Bernard was 53 years old when she was born in 1870 so the story of his longevity is probably untrue however he was at least 20 years older than his wife Mary as her age was given as 33 on the same birth certificate. I think he must have been born c1817.

If anyone has any clues about my Great grand dad I would like to hear from you.

  • Hi Wendy,

Many of the Dublin church records are online at www.ireihgenealogy.ie.  this is a free site.  Just put in Bernards name but leave the dat out.  this will give you all the babies christened, and you can gradually narrow it down and refine the search.  I found a few posibilities.

    Hope this helps,

  • wendy,

typo error. that should have read  www.irishgenealogy.ie

Pay particular attention to Bernard's children's names as they were often called after their grandparents.

  • Thank you Anne I will give that link a try.   I have made a note re: the naming pattern of the children.
