Recently I read in ancient cemeteries index an entry that stated " a monument erected by Phillip Meagher in memory of

His wife Catherine Meagher née Dowling " I am almost sure this couple is my great great grandparents .We spell our

name Maher .I would really love to communicate with family or somebody that has any information relating to Phillip and Catherine .

It stated Phillip was from Polough ,Templemore.

Hoping somebody out there can help

Many thanks, Mary

  • Hello Christina ,

Thanks for replying ,the cemetery is Tipperary (Templemore Parish ).

Catherine Meagher (Dowling) died Sept.10th,1856 ,aged 43 years.

It doesn't actually say when the monument was erected.

My Greatgrandfather Patrick came to Australia and his parents names were given as Philip and Catherine Meagher (Dowling)

I would really love to find some relatives in Ireland

    Many thanks ,Mary

  • Hello Christina, Mary here ,I have discovered that a John ,an Elizabeth and Thomas Maher/Meagher came to Australia

In 1862 aboard the "Ocean Empress " ,they were sponsored by a man called John Gleeson. According to other information I have found they appear to be my great grandfather Patrick's siblings ,the children of Phillip and Catherine

(Dowling)Maher .I thought this may be of some help .

    Best wishes Mary

  • Hi Mary. Apologies for not replying sooner.

I foung the monuments in old cemetary Templemore, and saw monument with inscription you describe.

Headstone just below it erected by Wm Maher of Polough in memory of his son Thomas Maher, died July 1831 aged 24.  Also the above Wm Maher died July 1831 aged 67.

Saw Elizabeth John and Thomas Maher on Peter Maddens Shipping list  The address Polough after Elizabeths name only

All on the same ship,  all paid for by Mr Gleeson.  Also another John on same ship aged  26  dident say who paid his passage,

Searched for townland of  Polough in Tipperary north riding couldent find one.  I found Pollagh in Kilcomenty civil parish Barony bof Owney and Arra , also in Kilvellane same Barony.  No Mahers/Meaghers in either in Griffiths valuation 1850s.

I also searched co Offally  which is very near no luck there either,

I will ring the local Library there on monday and try and find out more on this Townland

    Christina.

  • Hi Mary, Philip put up headstone to his wife Catherine nee Dowling in 1856,  which means he was still alive.

So he was still alive during Griffiths valuation. which you can access at www.askaboutireland.ie.

I have just found 16 Philip Mahers in North Tipperary on it, have not gone through all of rhem looking for                                Polough /Pollogh.

It is possible Philips fathers name was still on the property. or that they had maybe moved to a new address. The latter being unusual and unlikely.  I would love to find exactly which Parish they came from ,so you can search the new records that came on line free last year, at www.registersnli.ie

Will keep in touch re this.

    Christina.

  • Hi Mary, I was just playing on my computer today and found your querie so I joined OX just to help you out. Pollagh is a townland or a type of sub townland in the greater town land of Borrisbeg, Templemore, County Tipperary. It is a smal area of land down a long lane on the Borrisbeg/ Roscrea Road. Down that particular lane you had three different Maher families, the Borrisbeg Mahers, the Ivy Hall Mahers and the Pollagh Mahers. They all intermarried over the centuries and are all related in some complex way or another. Most of the surviving relatives know very little about their ancestors and so it is hard to find the information you want. However, there are lots of Borrisbeg Mahers around, along with the Ivy Hall ones but the Pollough ones who are very thin on the ground at this point. If you have any further questions let me know.

In fact if you could give me some sort of family tree I may be able to patch things for you.

Groom. Philip Maher.         Bride.     Anne Doolan.

It has been suggested that Dowling/Doolan  are one and the same .It was great to read that you have a lane where they all lived  .According to information I have Patrick came to Australia in 1876 aboard the ship "Nineveh"

Hoping this will give you a start.Thank you very, very much for your interest.
