My great grandmother MARY BOURKE neeO'BRIEN was the daughter of THOMAS O'BRIEN and CECILIA LANIGAN.  Mary was born 17 August 1826 and had siblings Thomas b 1828 and Kitty born 1830.  All three siblings were born in Thurles.  When Mary Bourke died her obituary stated that she was "born in Thurles and raised in Carrick on Suir and was the daughter of Mr T O'Brien and a neice of Dr J O'Brien and grandaughter of Councillor Lannigan of Templemore".   For thirty years I have unsuccessfully searched for the O'Brien/Lanigan marriage as well as the baptism of Cecilia Lanigan.   A researcher found the baptism of Mary and her siblings in Thurles.  I would greatly appreciate any help given.   Regards, Cheryl, Australia

I think the marriage and the baptismal record for Cecelia occurred in churches where records no longer exist for that time period. I did a number of searches including the new intergrated RC parish data base on Find My Past and came up with no records, Thurles has continuous marriage records except for 1821 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0280  and unless the preist's handwriting was so illegible that the names did not look like O'Brien and Lanigan, it is likely they married in a nearby parish which does not have records for the period.

  • Thank you for your prompt reply Roger.  What you have said has made a lot of sense.  Over the years I have accessed some unindexed records and trawled through looking for a result but haven't found anything.  Not having any local knowledge has been a great disadvantage.  Good to know that I have probably done all I can and some information is just "unfindable", unless of course a family member reads this and has a family bible with the information.  Your insight is much appreciated.     Regards, Cheryl
