  • Hi there,

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Terryglass (Killaloe). These start from 1827 for baptismal records and marriage records. These are available from the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2482, or the Church of Latter Day Saints ref. no. 0926102. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

Could you please post your message here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/kilfithmone-tipperary

I found this website you may find useful: http://www.irelandgenweb.com/irltip/townlands/Kilfithmone.htm It contains information and records for Kilfithmone.

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

  • Anyone know if it was Atkinson family member from Tipperary who founded Atkinson Township in Henry County Illinois as a search of any records for that area shows a huge amount of the family born in Ireland.

Chasing info on John Atkinson and Ancestors.  Born 1828 Terryglass.  He was the 8th child of James and Sarah Atkinson. Emigrated in 1851 to South Australia.

Possibly James was born in Ireland in 1780 and possibly died in 1850

  • Hi trjhsn, I am a descendant of another Atkinson family, son of whom Thomas emigrated to Tasmania, Australia in 1854.  Have you had any further success in uncovering much about your ancestor Jonathan Atkinson christened 1830.  His parents were recorded as Thomas & Nancy.   I have discovered records in the Tithe Applotments of 1825 showing where Thomas & Nancy each, independently rented land off a George Atkinson in townland of Ashley Park in parish of Cloghprior.   It is interesting why Thomas and Nancy went considerable distance to Terryglass to register the birth of their 3 sons.  regards Peter

  • Hi Peter,
    Yes the same Julia.
They lived in Derrinleigh, known as Bogside. There were 3 cottages, I stayed with my Aunt and Uncle in the middle one before they moved out towards the town. I did go in the Kennedy house in the 1960's
We went down there about 4 years ago, the Kennedy cottage, is now a stabe.
My Aunt and Uncles house and the other one have gone.
See this map below......from Borrisokane follow the road south, Bushy Park, then Gaulross, move Gaulross to the top of your screen, you will see Mount Falcon, then below that you will see Ballyrickard, thats where I lived before moving to England,.
On the right at the top of the screen you will see ROAD and a little map, point to it and you will see Aerial, click on it. To the left of Ballynevin there is a wooded area, that is Derrinleigh.
Go back to the road and go south until you see Lough Eorna on the left of the road, where it says Ashley Park, that is the drive up to the house.
Thomas Atkinson in Griffiths Valuation was in Killeen, Terryglass.
Patrick and Julia are buried in Ardcroney, by the old Church.
About 3 years ago I did all this information for a lady from Australia, when I have completed a search I delete everything, I don't remember her name sorry.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers
