Thanks for your help Bill.

Our family records show John was the son of James and Sarah (apparently the 8th child).  He and his brother James and sister Maria came to South Australia in 1851.  Their father James was apparently murdered ??? in 1850.

James was married to Charlotte Dagg on 30 Nov 1850 at Terryglass.

Children of James and Sarah appear to be

Margaret 21Nov1810
John 18 Jan 1813
Thomas 1 Jan1817
James14Apr1819
Elizabeth19May1821
Henry 16Jan1824
Maria 4 Aug 1825
John 27 October 1828

I presume the 2nd born (John) died but this is a guess.

In regards to Tasmania, Thomas went there in 1854 so as a descendant of John Atkinson we would have Tasmanian connections.

Once again thanks.  We are looking at spending a week in Ireland in October this year and this has spurred my interest.

regards

Rob Atkinson

  • Hi Rob

From my accounts James spent his latter years in a place called Bantiss Cloughjordan Tipperary  .

Would appear that most of the family emigrated between 1851 and 1854 cannot as yet find if his wife Sarah was alive at this time.

Am I correct then in stating that only three siblings remained in Ireland namely Margaret ,Elizebeth and Henry in which case only living relatives named Atkinson would have came from Henry's side unless any of the others returned to Ireland ?

Another member of our group is  trying to make contact with a living relative here in Ireland at present who may actually have briefly worked as teacher at the new village school

If you open up the Tipperary page here and go to Galleries and Images of Terryglass you will see some images of the village today including the old school house where James was master from 1809-1837 it is  now a community hall .

We are following up a few other leads andw will pass on any further info we recieve.

    Regards Bill Ryan.
