My 2G grandparents Matthew Tierney and Bridget Duggan married on 8 October 1854 in Thurles, Tipperary.  I've been unable to confidently track Bridget "Biddy" Duggan back, as I don't have a birth year or county of residence.  Since I don't have a birth year, I'm also unable to confidently track her year of death.  I'd welcome anyone looking at the attached marriage record to see if I've misread the name, or to suggest other searches other than baptismal records in Thurles.  I'm guessing she would have been born abt. 1834 +/- 5 years.  The earliest record for a child of the couple I can find is in 1855 in Thurles.  My great grandfather (Matthew Tierney) was born in 1857.  Any ideas appreciated, as I'm fairly new to the world of Irish online records.

The subscription site Roots Ireland has two possible baptismal records for Bridget Duggan in Thurles RC records. In both cases the surname was transcribed as Doughan which is not much different from Duggan. The years were 1831 and 1833. Parents were Timothy Doughan/Bridget Fogarty in 1831 and Patrick Doughan/Mary Stapleton in 1833.

There are very few Bridget Tierney death records in the Thurles registration district.

There is one in 1904 which may be a lead. See fifth record https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1904/05636/4586008.pdf

  • Thanks so much for your response, Roger.  I didn't realize that Doughan could be a substitute for Duggan.  I'll have to look into that more.

Unfortunately, a couple of Bridget's sons emigrated to England, and then went on to Canada.  I don't know if the parents (Bridget and Matthew) followed, so I don't know for certain that she died in Thurles, or even Ireland, for that matter.

Son Matthew shows in the English 1881 census, and was married in London 2 years prior (1879).  Son Joseph was married in 1887 in London.  I cannot with certainty locate Joseph in an 1881 English census.  I have not found an English census in 1871 or 1881 with both father and mother (Bridget and Matthew), so cannot be certain of their details.

If you have any thoughts about how I might track them, please share.  I'm planning a trip to Ireland in September, and would like to make the most of my time in Tipperary.

    Best,

    Terry

There are no Martin Tierney civil death records in the Thurles area so my guess is that Martin and Bridget also went to England.

Spelling in the 19th century was a lot less exact compared  to the 20th and  21st centuries. So Doughan and Duggan would sound the same

Have you considered a general DNA test? You may have matches with 3rd or 4th cousins on the Duggan line and they may have more info on the family.

If you finalize your trip for next September, you can fill out this form regarding your trip  https://www.irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet
