Thank you for any information that can be provided about the Irish background of my 2xGreat Grandparents, John Ryan and Johanna Fogarty.

John and Johanna (circa 1800-1850) had five children in Thurles.

James (1823-1889) emigrated to Ipswich Queensland;

John (1824-1875) emigrated to Missouri;

Catherine (1827-1917) emigrated to Kentucky;

Margaret Edna (1830-1916) emigrated to Missouri.

Michael (1825-1890),my Great Grandfather, emigrated to Esk, Queensland in 1854 after marrying Margaret Maher.

I have hit a proverbial brick wall regarding the life of John and Johanna in Ireland and would appreciate any input.

Many thanks

Carmel

  • Hi Carmel,
    I picked up Michael's record in a Tipperary list, see below. As he went in 1854, it says both parents had passed on.
    The Civil records were only introduced in 1864 so many deaths are not recorded before that year.
    It says (Tipp) Thurles. (Tipp) means Tipperary Town which is not that far from Thurles.
    RYAN Michael A 28 1854 28 (Tipp) Thurles ? John/Joanna both dead None .  R.C.  with wife Margaret on Ship = Monsoon
    This next record is Margaret
    RYAN Margaret A 28 1854 25 (Tipp) Thurles ? Patrick/Mary  MAHER living in Tipp.   -w/o Michael- Sisters in Sydney. Ship = Monsoon
    So, she has sisters in Sydney, do you know them?
    In Australia you would have to look through the ship records.
    As Ryan is a common name it's harder to find correct place of Births Deaths and Marriages.
    I hope this is a help

    Many thanks Margot for taking the time to reply.

    Yes I have found information about Michael and Margaret and their families after they emigrated to Australia.

    I remain hopeful that I will find more information about their lives in Ireland before they left on the “Monsoon” in 1854.

    Margaret’s parents, Patrick Maher and Mary Long eventually emigrated to Australia as well.

    Regards

  • Thanks Margot for your efforts.

    There are several Patrick Mahers in the family.

    The real challenge in family research is getting enough evidence to determine who is who, isn’t it?

    In the City and Regional Directories of 1856, there is a baker in Thurles called Patrick Maher. He lived in East Mains Street, Thurles.

    This fits with their future Master Baker profession in Australia.

    I will certainly follow up your information you have provided.

    Many thanks

    Carmel

  • So, five years later I return to this page with another very broad question.

    In preparation for future travel to Tipperary, what would I need to research to visit the area where my Great Grandfather was a baker? (If indeed this Patrick Maher is my ancestor)

    Many thanks for any guidance

    Carmel
