Hi.  This is our first posting.

Our immigrant Neely ancestor was baptised according to the Holycross-Ballycahill records in the mid 1850s, as were 8-10 other siblings.  How were baptisms handled in that time frame?  We assume that they took place in a church.   If so, which one?

Thanks.  neelyusa

  • ~~My apologies for if i post this twice.  I haven't figured out how the Ireland board works yet.

Is Holycross Catholic Church in a town called Holycross, Cormackstown or Thurles?

    Thanks.

  • Forgot to add.....All the different Irish parish/civil names confuse me.

The ancestor said that he was "born" in Thurles, so I posted it on that board.  And the Holycross-Ballycahill records sent by the historical society said that his parents lived and died in Cormackstown.

My goal is to see if there is an actual church that we can visit when we come to Ireland.

    Thanks, again.

  • Father Breen's email bounced back as undeliverable.

    Father Tierney never responded.

    Any other options?

    Thanks.  NeelyUSA

  • Hi there Neelyusa.

I visited Holycross last month.  There is a beautiful church there, and the remains of the old abbey.  The parish priests have both been sick.  Father Celsus was holding the fort, but was unwell when we were there.  It is well worth visiting.
