I am hitting a roadblock trying to get any info on Irish ancestors:

John Day and Ellen Murphy Day -they lived in Thurles and had 10 children(8 girls and 2 boys).I only know the name of the youngest child Jane "Jennie" Day who was born on Oct 2,1847 in Ireland. She emmigrated to America when she was approx in her early teens or earlier  I am told her parents were dead by whenever that time was that  she did cross over..She lived w/ an older sister in NY (whose name I don't know) until she married Thomas McDowell on July 19,1865 in Dinkirk,NY abd lived there until after she had her first 3 children. Then moved to Davenport,Iowa and eventually on to Lafayette,Indiana where she died in 1915.I am trying to get any info on the Day/Murphy family.Esp if I could get birth/baptismal on any of them or marriage/death info on the parents (John and Ellen).I know they were Catholic.I have searched on RootsIreland.ie,findagrave.com,titlesearch,Griifiths Valuation,There are like 8 Ellen Murphy birth/baptismal records for Co Tipperary on RootsIreland but I wouldn;t know which one that would be.I would have more luck by trying to get John's info.I did find 1 John Day on RootsIreland that had a John Day who died of paralysis from a spine injury suffered at a workhouse at Carrick-on-Suir (where he resided at),It stated he was 40 yrs old and married but didn't give wife name or cemetary info I am waiting to hear nack from .Tipperary Family Research Center but am not sure where else to turn to.Any suggestions/advice is appreciated.Thanx

  • I dont think Thurles RC records are available online on the RootsIreland website at the moment. Thurles comes under the North Tipperary Centre and as far as I know the Thurles records are currently are only available through the Tipperary Family Research Centre, or in the National Library on microfilm etc

  • Yes   I am finding out that this is true.Hopefully Tipperary family research centre can help.I wonder how to get more info about Irish workhouses in Thurles.I am not sure that is the correct John Day that died in that one in Carrick-on-Suir but would like to get more info on that one.

  • Carrick on Suir is in South Tipperary and right on the border with Co. Waterford, so some distance from Thurles - abt 60km (c38 miles). There were seveal Workhouse districts (Poor Law Unions) in Co. Tipperary, including one based in Thules so unless you have reason to believe the family moved I dont think Carrick on Suir record is a likely match.

  • I may have their name slightly wrong, seems to be 'Tipperary Family History Research'..  I've never had any reason to use their services, so cant help there. As far as I know their record collection includes transcripts of various parishes in their area. They concentrate on parts of North County Tipperary including Thurles see : parish list  (they seem to use a slightly unusual setup for their website, but that page links off their name page at www.tfhr.org )

It doesn't look like Thurles RC records are among those filmed by FamilySearch/LDS but it might be worth double checking that. If they have then you could order a film to search for a small fee at your local FamilyHistory Centre.

  • The FamilyHistory Centres are run by the Church of Latter Day Saints, the same people that run the FamilySearch website and provide many Family History records online. They have records from all over the world, including some of RC parish records for Ireland.

    Some details on Wikipedia here

  • Thanx Paddy- I have contacted Familyresearch Center.I am wondering-do u know if they have fairly high success rates finding marriage and baptismal certificates in RC parishes for Thurles? Also the records that are held in the parish center on Cathedral St-are they only accessible by a personal visit?Or are they  also a pay service?

  • Hi all , I am trying to get information about Mary Shelly, who i believe is my great grandmother. Mary was born in the Thurles area around 1868 and she gave birth to a son James in 1888. The father's name is not mentioned on the baptismal record which I obtained from the Thurles Parish Centre, so I suspect that the birth may have been out of wedlock? However, the sponsor is named as Hanora Shelly. I have searched the 1901 and 1911 census but was unable to find any relevant information, probably because Mary was married at that stage? I would dearly love to know what became of Mary and would appreciate any information or direction as to how I might go forward. Sarsfields1974 I have failed
