Looking for a birth or baptism record of my great-grandmother, Mary Ann Lonergan born 2 Sep 1865 in Tipperary, Ireland according to my grandfather who would sing, "Mary from Tipperary" is the only clue I have.  The birthdate was written on her death certificate.  I've had a few other records say about 1863 and even 1864.  Her certificate also states that she was born in Philadelphia, but my mom, her grand-daughter says that's a mistake by the informant, Mary's husband, Philip Jones.

Mary Ann's parents are Johanna Doherty or Dougherty born about 1843 in Tipperary, Ireland and James Lonergan born Apr 1834 Tipperary, Ireland.

To confuse where my great-grandmother Mary was born, some documents say England & some say Ireland.  She was definitely Irish not English, but if her parents were traveling, she could have been born in England possibly.  I believe Mary's parents married about 1862 in Tipperary, Ireland.  Mary seems to be the oldest & first-born child.  A sister, Margaret G. Lonergan was born in England Feb 1865 - 1868?  The rest of the children are born in Pennsylvania, USA.  They are William Lonergan born about 1869; Anna V. Lonergan born 20 Oct 1872 in Pottstown, PA, USA; Kate D. Lonergan born 1874 in Pottstown, Montgomery County, PA, USA; twin girls Jane Lonergan & Johanna/Hannah H. Lonergan born June of 1877 in Breconshire, Glamorgan, Mid Glamorgan, United Kingdom.

In 1881, Johanna Lonergan age 38; William Lonergan age 11; Annie Lonergan age 9; Kate Lonergan age 7; Hannah Lonergan age 4 and twin sister Jane Lonergan age 4 along with John Scanlon age 50; James Scanlon age 16 and William Jones age 12 who is the brother of Mary Lonergan's husband, Philip Jones are all enumerated in the Civil parish Merthyr Tydfil, County of Glamorgan, Wales at 2 Back Victoria St.  This census states that Johanna Doherty was born in Tipperary, Ireland and that she is the head of the house.  James, her husband didn't seem to travel to Wales with her nor did daughters Mary and Margaret.  James is listed in the 1900 Pottstown, PA, USA Census as widowed.  Could not find a death date for Johanna in the USA, it doesn't appear that she returned to the USA after the twins were born and possibly died in Wales or even Ireland?

Some other surnames connected to this Lonergan family in the USA and show up as sponsors for the Lonergan children are Crowley, Sullivan, King, Fry, Bickel & Lally.

Mary Ann Lonergan married Philip Jones on 16 Aug 1887 at St. Aloysius R.C. Church, Pottstwon, PA, USA. She died 25 Feb 1917 in South Philadelphia after falling down her outside back stairsteps at the age of 51 years, 5 months & 5 days old.

I'm attaching a photo of Mary Ann Lonergan Jones and her death certificate.

Thank you Ireland Reaching Out for this opportunity to possibly connect with anyone related still living in Ireland and find her baptism or birth record.

Her great-grand-daughter, Pat (Patricia Mary Carroll) Bennett living in MI, USA

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Please look at this August 14th 1864 civil birth record (seventh record down on the page). You will have to sign-in to see the record. The father is William Lonergan and the mother was Johanna Deveraux not Doherty or Dougherty.

  • Roger,

Once again, thank you & Happy New Year!  You helped me find my great grandfather William Carroll's baptism record in Louth not too long ago.

I want so badly for the record you had me look at be my Mary Lonergan, but I really doubt her dad's name being William, unless it was his middle name or James is his middle name & he went by that?  Also, the Devereaux surname for Johanna doesn't sit right with me, and yet, in trying to find one of my Mary Lonergan Jones' children who moved to CA early 1920's, I did see a record that listed her mother as a Devereaux, but I'm just not sure.

I'm making a list of all the records that I have for James & Johanna to see how often he is James and how often she is something other than Doherty or Dougherty.

My thought is until I do that & can intelligently decipher it, is that Mary Ann Loenrgan could have been born in England as it states on a US census and the Lonergan's you found are related, but not my great-greats.  Since William is the name of their first born son, it is very likely William is a brother of James.

Since I am not familiar with the spellings of some of the names of places, would you be able to enlighten me on the correct spellings of 4 places?  It looks like CLOGHEEN is the Registrar's District; ARDFINNAN is the District of the Births Registered; and the Place of birth for Mary and William looks like it could be the same name or maybe not?  BALLINALLAUR OR BALLINARAWN?  It's hard to see.  I appreciate that, it will let me look further into possibly a marriage record or more records for the Lonergan's if they exist.  Could you please tell me how far back the records go for Ballylooby?  I have 1834 and 1843 for the possible birth years for James & Johanna.  I believe they marry around 1862.

Thank you so much Roger and I will be back with what I can figure out from making a chart for each one - Mary, her mom Johanna & her dad James, to make sure James can't be a William and Johanna is a Doherty or Dougherty instead of a Devereaux.  I may be spelling Devereaux wrong, also.  Hard to tell if there is an 'a' near the end?

I've actually wrote up a list on each of the 3 people above, but it is so poorly organized & scribbled as I did come across some new pieces of evidence that I hadn't seen earlier on and made notes all over them.  I'll gather the argument for each and get back to you as soon as possible.

My mistake on William instead of James.

Here is a link to the Ballylooby parish register and records start in 1828. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1094

Each civil registration district (or Superintendent Registrar's District) has a number of subordinate registrar districts sometimes shown as dispensary districts.  For your record, Clogheen is the SRD. Clogheen covers a number of civil parishes in southwest Tipperary. Ardfinnan is the Registrar district. The townland name is likely not spelled correctly and I looked at all the townlands in Tubbrid and Tullaghorton civil parishes and did not see a townland name close to what was shown on the record. Sorry!

  • Roger,

Thank you so much for your last email.  I will look at the link you gave me.

I have gathered all the records with the names of the 3 people in question & where each document said they were born.  It is very varied.  I'm going to add up how many times each place or surname is mentioned and see which one wins out, hoping that the majoirty rules here.

I'm not ruling out the William you did find as James & Johanna named one of their sons, William.  He could easily be a brother to James or a cousin or even a nephew?  Time will tell.

I'll be back with my deductions if they seem to give more clues.  I did forget to mention that Lonergan is spelled several different ways over the years:  Londrigahn, Lanuegan, Lonigan, Lanigan & Lonergan.  I think many of the varied spellings are the clerk writing it, hearing i,t but not knowing how to spell it.  Lonergan is used more than the other spellings.

Roger, I have another question, which is embarrsing as I feel as if I am daft, but every time I go onto Irelandxo, I have to log in and then it says I have the wrong password.  I set my computer to remember my password, but it doesn't seem to be saving it.  Since I can't get into the site, I have to reset my password & get a new one.  Is there anyway to go on site without having to do all that each time?  I hope I am making sense.

    Thanks, Pat Carroll Bennett
