Michael b1864c & Richard b1865c MAHER were sponsored out to Bunbury, West Australia by Mrs Catherine WHITE (née MAHER) who resided there with her husband James & family.

The two lads sailed on the "Mikado" in 1882.  MAHER surname  transcribed as MAKER.

Despite searching every which way but, I cannot find anything on Michael & Richard MAHER back in Ireland.

Am thinking Catherine may have been their Aunty perhaps??

Catherine (Kitty) Maher was born in Pallis, Tipperary 31/5/1829 to Michael & Ellen (Stapleton). She married James White 25/7/1847 who later came out to W Aust as a convict in 1853. Catherine followed out in 1856.

Catherine's siblings - Johannah 1815, Ellen 1817, Phil 1819, Michael 1821, James 1823, Mary 1825, James 1827,Thomas 1831, Patrick 1833 & Martin 1825, all born Pallis/ Pallas Cross.  (Can't confirm any Marr records etc for these siblings)

Was Catherine an Aunty to Richard & Michael ?  And therefore, they sons to one of the above brothers?

I have a subs with FMP & feel I have covered all their Irish records as thorough as one can. Also the Tipperary section of "Ireland Genealogy Projects".

Hoping someone can help me!

Thank you.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Which parish did you find the baptismal records for Catherine and her siblings? Civil registration started in 1864 and I note a few Richard Maher birth records on FMP around 1864-1865.

  • Thanks for your reply Roger.

Catherine & siblings baptismal records are listed under the parish of Borrisoleigh, Tipperary.

Yes, I have seen the baptism listings for Richard & Michael on FMP. But of course the search results for Irish Births 1864-1958, do not name the parents - not that time frame from what I can see.  And with the results of the Ireland R C Parish Baptisms I haven't come across any christian names to match up with any of the MAHER siblings.

Even cross referencing all the search results for both Michael & Richard hasn't brought me any matching christian names or place names.

So at the moment it just seems to leave it all up in the air with no definite answers - unfortunately!

    The only marriage registered in Borrisoleigh in July 1847 . . reads  . . ( I think)

married by the Rev.John Morris . . James White and Cath.Maher of Dolla  (Dolla is a district half between Nenagh //B'o'Leigh)

    Wittness . . James Maher and Mary Maher  . . .

    ___________________________________________________________

Ancestry.Com . . . has many very similar births registered in Borrisoleigh to three different parents . . similar sibling christian names . .  . same year dates . . . but by process of elimination . . I believe your Catherine was born to MICHAEL and ELLEN Stapleton . . ( Staleton being a very popular Borrisoleigh name - still)

    __________________________________________________________________________

Catherine Maher . . however . . does not easily fit in to the Borrisoleigh family of siblings  . . . which brings it back to your hunch . . that she is related . . but how . . .

    • Hi Eamonn. thanks for your time & reply.  It has helped me to firm up some of the info I had - always helps to have another set of eyes!

Loved the link to "Stapleton's Bakery" - shall definitely pay a visit when I do get to Tipperary.

Meanwhile back to the research of my Stapleton/ Maher families for more results to help make my visit really worthwhile.

      Thanks, Col
