I believe that my great, great, great great grandfather was Anthony Atkinson, of Co. Tipperary.  He built, I think, a house called South Park, in Rahinane (Ballingarry, N.R.) Tipperary North, around 1785.  I understand that the house still stands today.  I do not know his birth/death dates, but I believe his daughter, Elizabeth Atkinson, lived 1789-1870, so I guess he may have been born around 1760.  Any assistancne in tracking him down would be greatly appreciated.

  • Many thanks Jack,

Is Leets Directory available on line?  I don't seem to be able to locate it.

  • Hi Peter Campbell,

I just came across your post from 2014. As I'm an Atkinson from Tipperary originally I thought I would make contact to see if you had any further success in tracking down your connections.   I have some information about Anthony Atkinson (not believed related to me).   Unfortunately best research doesn't turn up a daughter Elizabeth from him, only a daughter Charlotte (Burke's Landed Gentry).  Am happy to share what I've got, and explore possibilities. Hi Peter,

Many thanks for your reply.  It's funny how connections can be made across the oceans and many years!

The Atkinson families in Ireland in the 17th/18th centuries seems to be quite widespread.  There are many Anthony Atkinsons recorded in Burkes.  I have a miniature portrait of "my" Anthony Atkinson which I know was painted around 1800 (+/- 20 years) - I've attached a copy for you to see. The sitter is perhaps 40 years old, and so by default he lived sometime from say 1750-1820.  The second attachment is from Burke's and this Anthony fits the right date/age range.  It is this Anthony who had a daughter Charlotte, as you say.  But unless Elizabeth is not listed, then he's the wrong Anthony.

So, my mystery continues ... if you ever are able to find more that would be great.  Otherwsie, thanks for your interest in any case.

    Kind regards, Peter.
