I am hoping someone can provide some clue/guidance as to how I can trace my great, great great grandfather and great great grandfather!!

Martin Maguire was in Tipperary certainly in 1829 when his son Patrick was born. Martin was a Labourer, and In 1829, he would've been around 19/20 so his birthdate would've been around 1809/1810.

This is as much as we know about Martin & Patrick's Irish roots.

We know that Patrick came to live in Sheffield, England as he married Elizabeth O'connor there on 6/12/1863, aged 34 and Elizabeth aged 25. They lived at 3 Brown Street, Sheffield.

Elizabeth was born in Middx England c1837, her father was William O' Connor from Dublin who was a shoemaker we believe. He was born c1810.

Patrick had 2 children, Catherine and William Martin (born 18/8/70 baptised 18/9/70 at St Marie's in Sheffield).

For information, the son William Martin Maguire, my great grandad, lived in Beeston Nottingham and married twice his first wife (Margaret) and first son died. He married Edith Rawson and went on to have 7 more children. They lived at Hasland, Derbys.

Thank you for reading this, and for any help you can give

Kind regards Carl Maguire clmag@ymail.com

I checked the Roots Ireland indexes and did not find a baptismal record for a Patrick Maguire/McGuire in Co. Tipperary, father Martin for the years 1824-1834.

A number of Co. Tipperary parishes do not have records back that far and their are some parishes that are not included in the Roots data base.

I also looked at the Tithe listings www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie

I did locate a Martin Maguire record in 1828 in Croghan townland, Loughkeen civil parish. Loughkeen is in northern Tipperary on the border with Co. Offaly. Keep in mind that if Martin was just a labourer, he would not have been leasing land and be captured on the Tithes. I pass this record as a possible lead.

  • Roger,

Many thanks for your response, it's very helpful if only as a means to eliminate areas from my search!

I will check this out any way and record it in my records.

    Once again, thanks and regards

  • Carl,

I have also been looking for a John Maguire who was reportedly born in Terryglass civil parish, North County Tipperary.  I don't have much to help you with except I encourage you to double check the source that lead you to County Tipperary and I would wonder if you would expect Martin and Patrick to be in Catholic or Church of Ireland parish registers, or other.

I saw a James Maguire in Griffith's valuation in Garryeighter in 1830, civil parish Clonrush, County Galway (http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/galway/clonrush.php).  I also saw a James and Patrick Maguire in the Tithe Applotments in Garryeighter, Clonrush civil parish, County Galway.

I recently heard that FindmyPast has a record of dog licenses for Ireland in the 1880s, maybe too late a time period for your Maguires, who moved to Sheffield, England by 1860.

I personally would like to compare notes and/or compare dna results if possible with you.  I have autosomal dna results on ancestry and gedmatch.com.  Best wishes for many good results for you.
