My great, great, great grandmother Bridget (Gaul) Gleason (or Gleeson) has her place of birth listed as Gannonsfield or Garransfield, Ireland on her death registration here in the US.  Where can this be?  I have searched maps and townland lists for Tipperary many times and have yet to find a match.  I have tried Irish and English translations, but I am still lost.

Bridget Gaul was born in 1807 and her husband, Michael Gleason (or Gleeson), was born in 1808.  Bridget was the daughter of Patrick and Mary Gaul, and Michael was the son of Philip and Mary Gleason (Gleeson).

Bidget and Michael emigrated to the US in the 1840s and settled in Florence, Massachusetts around 1843.  While still in Ireland, they had 6 children (maybe more): Philip (b. 1831), Catherine (b. 1834), Mary (b. 1834), Bridget (b. 1836), Thomas (b. 1839) and Margaret (b. 1839).

Any help finding Garransfield or Gannonsfield would be much appreciated.  Thank you!

How about Gammonsfield, a small townland a couple of miles east of Clonmel? It's in the RC parish of Gambonsfield. Today it?s where the N76 road is intersected by the R 706. (Or it could just be the parish, rather than the townland that was meant as her place of origin).

  • I just looked at the death document again.  I think it does say Gammonsfield.  My ggg parents were definitely Catholics.  Thanks so much for your help, Ahoghill Antrim!

  • This area is Kilsheelan now, although the Catholic Church is still locally referred to as Gammonsfield Church.  Kilsheelan is midway between Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir.

  • Many thanks to you, Ahogill Antrim.  Thanks to your recommendation of Gammonsfield, I was able to solve the mystery of when/how my Gleesons came to the US.  So grateful for the help!
