Greetings,

My name is Don Bott, and I live in California. I have many Irish ancestors from both sides of my family. At this time I am trying to find more about my great great grandfather, John Dunn.

Here is what I know, or at least believe to be true:

  • John was born in 1812 in County Tipperary.
  • He married Bridget Ryan in 1842, almost certainly in Ireland. Bridget was from Cork, though, so I'm not sure.
  • Shortly after this time, the couple immigrated to Canada and then later to the U.S.
  • Children born to them (in this order): Margaret, Roderick, William, Ann, Mary, Winifred, Stephen, Ellen, James, Eliza. We are pretty sure all of the children were born in Canada.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

  • Hi Don,

www.rootsireland.ie/ has the record of the baptism of John Dunn 1812 in Tipperary.

There is a cost to get the record so you will need to register and pay for some credit but you get the record immediatley and it is far chaeper than the GRO.

I couldn't find the marriage record though.

No luck on the Canadian censuses for the other questions - sorry.

Nothing to add on the Irish side as yet- and  you may have this information already- 1851 Canadian Census Biddulph Huron County shows John, Bridget and 5 children Margaret age 9 Rody age 8 Wm age 6 ann age 4 Maria age 2 stating they were born in Ireland. (The eldest Margaret must have died as later census show a Margaret of a younger age) 1860 US Census the family is in Port Huron St Clair Michigan farming and with  additional children Winifred 8 Stephen 5 Ellen 4 James 2 All the children are shown as born in Canada apart from Ann birthplace given as NY.

In 1870 US the family are in Sleeping Bear  Leelanau Michigan.

I did look for any births on Rootsireland for the earlier children but found none - possible as you say they were born in Canada but not all the parish records for Tipperary are online at rootsireland.
