Hello!  I'm seeking information on Patrick Corbitt who married Mary Dearney.  Family verbal history says they had a child named Ellen that died in Ireland.  Patrick came to USA around 1850 or '52, settled in central Illnois, then sent for Mary.  They had several more children here in Illinois.  Family verbal history says they were from Cork, but USA census records show they reported being from Tipperary.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Several of us here have been searching many years for their place of origin.

Many thanks,

Lori in Peoria, Illinois, USA

  • Hi Lori,

Thank you very much for your query to Ireland Reaching Out. I would consider the census record to be a bit more accurate than word of mouth. It is possible that Cork was part of your family's history in some way (perhaps they lived there once, had other relatives living there, or sailed from there). In such a case, please place your message on the County Tipperary parish profile page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/county-tipperary

Check more official documents in the US. You might find more clues about the location where they were from.

You should also consider all the variant spellings of the two surnames, for example, Corbitt could also be Corbett, etc.

Best of luck in your research!

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Lori,

Go to rootsireland.ie and put in ellen's name with a year of 1850.  this will throw up may records.  Go down the page and click on counties Cork and Tipperary.  Then put in Patrick in the fathers name and you will get 2 hits. one for Cork and one for tipp.  the other one is 1852 so may not be your ancestor.

You will need to open these to see if this is the correct record.  It will cost about €5 per view but the site is really good for parish records.  most records are on this site but for the few counties that are not the government has started www.irishgenealogy.ie (totally free).  Cork county is split between two websites.

If you can find Ellen, you'll eventually find her parents.

    Kind regards,
