I'm look for information on my great-grandfather, STEPHEN RYAN. Stephen was from County Tipperary and came to the United States when he was about 16 years. He was born approximately 1848-50. I don't know his parent's names. He and his two brothers came to the US, but I don't know the brother's names,  if they all came together or if they all went to the same place.  Stephen went to Washington, Daviess County, Indiana, US.

He met and married Catharine/Catherine MAHER. Her parents were John and Mary MAHER.  Stephen and Catharine lived in Indiana until they and their 6-? children moved to Craighead County, Arkansas.  They lived in Craighead County until they died. Stephen 10-July-1916 and Catharine 14-December-1937. They were both buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Jonesboro Ark.  Can you help me find more information about them, I have been looking for about 15 years.  Please???  Thank you!!!

  • Hello

I'd like to try to help but can you answer some questions first please.

Can you tell us how you know Stephens approx DOB and age on arrival in states please?  Do you know where he arrived into?  Lastly, why do you think he had brothers that went to the US as well?

    Thank you.

  • Stephen RYAN was my great grandfather, my father's grandfather.  My dad and his mother always told me that Grandpa Stephen came to the US when he was 16.  They never knew where he entered the country.  They also always told me his two brothers came also.  Other older relatives told me the same things about Grampa Stephen.  They thought his brothers MIGHT have been named John and Patrick Ryan, but not sure about that.

I just looked at picture of his gravestone and it says he was 68 when he died.  I think that would mean he was born about 1848-50.  I don't know his exact birthdate.

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!     Carol

  • I just found another copy of the USA Census, 1880.  It shows Stephen's  birthday as  April 1848.  It does not give a date.  His gravestone gives his death date as 1916.  The stone gives his age as 68 years.

There was no mention of parents.

  • Hi Carol www.rootsireland.ie has records of 10 baptisms for a stephen ryan in Tipperary North nearest one to stephens birth given is 1 in 1846 - the others vary from 1843/1844/1845/1853. This is a pay site and you would need to first register before you can proceed.  Do you know the names of stephens children as this may provide a clue to his parents names as common in Ireland was the Naming Pattern wherby children could be named after fathers/mothers parents. Just exploring all avenues as it is extremely difficult without stephens parents names. Most irish immigrants tended to go to New York/Boston /Pennsylvania so am wondering why stephen settled in Indiana initially maybe had relations there.  Regards Frances

  • Hi Frances,

Stephen and Catharine had these children:  Mary, Lewis, William, Stephen, Annie.

I knew Aunt May (Mary) and Aunt Annie when I was young. They didn't die until the early 1960s.  I also knew Uncle Steve, who I think died in the 1970s or maybe 80s.  They all continued to live in Craighead County Arkansas.

William was my grandfather, my dad's father, he died 1930.  I never knew Lewis, he had problems.  My dad said he "Wasn't right in the head."

My dad said he THINKS he remembers when his grandpa's (Stephen's) brother, John, came to ARK to visit once. He was on his way to Oklahoma. Only time he remembers any of his grandparents family coming to ARK to visit.

I just wish I had asked questions back when they were all alive.  They could have answered them for me.  They could have given me so much information.

    Carol

  • Hi Carol Stephen gives his date of arrival in US as 1868 in 1900 Census so the following passenger record may be a possibility

Stephen Ryan b. c 1844 age 24 Origin Ireland. Port Departure Liverpool England & Queenstown - Port of Arrival New York 8th July 1868. Ship name FRANCE

You must bear in mind that in those days people were often unsure of their precise birth date as there wasnt Civil Registration in Ireland until 1864.

  • Hi Carol

I did a search on RootsIreland for Stephen Ryan born Tipperary between 1845 and 1855 and there are 6 matches.  This is a subscription site so I have not viewed the details for these records.  And even if I could I'm afraid there is no way of knowing which, if any, is the correct record.  We would really need a parents name or some other key peice of information like parish.  I'm really sorry.  Could there be other records in the US that you could look at?  Parish records or property deeds perhaps?

    Best regards

  • Hello Linda,

I appreciate the effort you have made to help me find information on my g-grandfather.

I just don't have any more information to give you.  I'll always keep trying and maybe someday I'll find his parents names.  Or even his brothers names might help.
