I'm writing to seek any information regarding the Ormond Mining Company in the United States (North Carolina).  I believe that my great-grandfather, Kellis James Kennedy, may have been employed or had close relatives who were employed by the company.

From what I have been able to piece together, the family names that occur together in that area of North Carolina (Ormond, Mauney, Kennedy) only occur together in Tipperary.

Many thanks for your attention in this matter.

  • Hello Mr Kennedy

Do you have any idea of approx year. I did a general search and most of the mines were privately owned until the Mining Company of Ireland took leases out on several mines from 1825s. The value of the quantity annually doubled by the year 1826 and the increase was attributable to the exertions of the Mining Company of Ireland. There was also a copper and lead mines near Silvermines. They were first worked by an English company who extracted silver from the ore in the 1700 when there lease expired new veins were opened and the works extended in different directions by successive companies - maybe try researching this.

Kennedy is also a very stong North Tippearay name, mostly found around Templederry, Borrisoleigh, Nenagh.

Nenagh was divided into two baronies : Lower Ormond and Upper Ormond -(is this where you got the Ormond from)

Dont know if this is any help, let me know how you get on.

    Regards

    Antoinette
