My grandmother Margaret Kelly born 1900 Cahir, appears on 1911 Census with her parents Denis and Mary Anne nee Sullivan.  They are living on Lane north of William O'Brien Street next door to Mary Anne's brother Eugene Sullivan.  Margaret came to England where she married my grandfather Frank Toms after the death of his first wife her cousin Bridie Sullivan.  Maggie then died from TB when my father Dennis was 10 months old.  There has been no contact with any of our Irish relations since then.  Any information would be welcome.

  • Hi Tom

Thank you very much for your reply it is so nice to have my internet research corroborated!  I sometimes wonder if I am jumping to conclusions in my desperation to find something.  I brought my late Uncle (Bridie's son) to Cahir in 1997 and we also went to Tipperary Town as he had a vague memory of his mother taking him to visit when he was a boy, but of course this was before the internet explosion in genealogy records.  As regards to Mary Anne's birth I favour the Charleville record for the reason that on Ancestry you can find her brother Patrick's military record where he states he was born in Charleville, however there also appears to be a family connection to Kilfinnane.  The is a very tangled weave of family history and I have lots of bits that I cannot connect up and that I cannot corroborate, and I won't enumerate them all here probably to your relief!    On her marriage certificate to my grandfather Frank on 1 Aug 1924, Maggie stated that her father Denis was deceased however I have been unable to find a death registration for him.  Additional information that I do hold is that Owen/Margaret Sullivan were also on Kelly's Lane, Cahir in 1901.  We were always told that Patrick son of Owen and Margaret was Bridie's father and he certainly appears as such on her marriage certificate and my uncle knew him in Portsmouth as his grandfather, however I cannot source any other evidence of this fact.

    Many thanks

    Caroline
