Great Grandfather emigrated to US around 1850.  Born in Tipp on 9 January 1829.  Roman Catholic.  Name is STEPHEN HAYES.  Married Anne Heeney (b. 14 February 1835 in Oldcastle, Co. Meath).  They met and married on 23 September 1853.  Married in Butler Co, Ohio (near Cincinatti).  Had 6 children: Jennie,Stephen,John Francis,Anne,Katie,?

Stephen Hayes and family moved to Doniphan Co, Kansas around 1875.  He was a farmer.  Likely bought sm parcel of land under US Homestead Act.  He did join the Union army during US Civil War.  I cannot find his Army record -- too many duplicate names

I  have found an immigration record which seems to fit him.  Lists a 20 year old Stephen Hayes on manifest of ship DE WITT CLINTON sailing from Liverpool and arriving in New York on 20 June 1849.

Stephen died in Bendena, Doniphan,Kansas on 01 July 1890.  Buried in cemetary at St. Benedict's Roman Catholic Church in Bendena, Kansas.

  • Hi there,

Could you please post your message on the following parish page: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/oldcastle-meath (Oldcastle)

Great job to find the name on the passenger list. Thats excellent. Did it list any other information? At least it will give you some indication of age and the year he left Ireland. This will help to narrow it down when you start searching records.

Obviously it would be ideal to have a more precise place of origin. This way you could check for church records.

Have you checked for Anne Heeney's baptismal record? There are Roman Catholic church records available for Oldcastle. These date from 1789 for baptismal, marriage and burial records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4188, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, film 0926180. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

There are also 1838-48 Reproductive Loan Fund records. There are c.450 names listed. This is at the UK National Archives T 91. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

You can check for information about the frequency of the name in the mid-19th century and any other variant spellings of the name here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS).

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

    Genealogist (Ireland XO)
