Greetings from New York. I am seeking information on my gg-grandparents, Bridget (nee Carew) and Terence Reilly. They had a son (my g-grandfather), Terence, who was born in Ireland in 1842 and immigrated to New York around 1870.  A genealogist indicated that the Carew family came from Tipperary and that there may be baptismal records for Bridget Carew. I was also told that while Reilly is more common in other areas, Reillys still outnumber Carews in Tipperary. I have not been able to pinpoint the parish of my gg-grandparents and would appreciate any information or direction that you might give me.

Warmest regards,

Christine

  • Hi Christine

If you go to the Roots Ireland website www.rootsireland.ie you will be able to search for children born to Terence and Bridget. I think where the difficulty lies is in the Canew spelling. I think the name is possibly spelt 'Caroon' or 'Caron' or a variation of that. There are at least 2 baptism records available on that site for a Caroon mother, named Bridget. A male child, Terence baptised on 18th Jan 1837 and a female, Bridget baptised in 1842. This may be the family you are looking for. Roots Ireland is a subscription site so you will have to buy credits to look at the info there. It is worth it if you have narrowed the search and only have to pay to view a handful of records.

As an aside, there are 4 Terence Reilly entries on the Castle Garden website, but the don't tell us very much at this point. Each gives a different date of birth but any one (or none!) could be your ancestor. The last is probably closest to the baptism date in the record mentioned above:

    Hope this helps.

  • Dear Clare,

Once again, Ireland Reaching Out comes to the rescue. Thank you so much for your response. I'm assuming that 'Carew' is a phonetic spelling, which could easily be a variation of several similar sounding names.

I have made donations to this site before and will do so again. I hope others do the same as you and the rest of the irelandxo team are providing a wonderful service. And we need to support this site.

    Best regards,

    Christine
