After having looked at relevant church records, I am seeking information about the family listed below. They were tenants in Ballagh townland in the 1820s and 1830s:

John Simpson

Betty Campbell

The times of their births, deaths, and marriage are unknown. Their children were:

William Simpson 1826

John Simpson 1829

Sarah Simpson 1831

Ann Simpson 1832-1922 (my ancestor, who seems to have emigrated to Canada alone around 1852)

James Simpson 1834

Mary Simpson 1836

Margaret Simpson 1837

I am happy to provide information about Ann Simpson, her family, and their time in Canada and the U.S. that may be of interest to the project. I am interested in hearing from anyone in Ireland who may have a connection to this family. I had the pleasure of visiting Caledon and Ballagh in 2008.

  • Dear Scott

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Have you tried to further your research by looking what the siblings of your direct ancestors.? You may be able to find out more in term of their lives in Ireland or whether they actually emigrated through passenger lists, the Griiffith's Valuation and the Census:

    Griffith's Valuation:http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

    1901/1911 Census: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

As an aside, there are also a few Simpson entries on the Flax Growers list 1796: http://www.failteromhat.com/post1796.php

  • Clare, thanks very much. The tips you provided are very good sources, but I have been through them.

I think that, short of finding someone related to me who already has done the research, I would need to return to Belfast and visit PRONI one day. The baptismal information that I already have come from a larger film at PRONI relating to Aghaloo parish. When I visited in 2008, I had time just to look up that much. But if I had more time to scroll through more parts of the film, I might be able to fill in some blanks.

Unfortunately, copies of the PRONI films are not available through the LDS world-wide lending system.

Thanks again! All the best, Scott Leonard
