James LINDSAY (some records have the spelling with the Medieval "e" as in Lindesay) (born abt 185 Gortagowan) and 5 children migrated to Australia in 1875. Mary aged 18, Thomas aged 18, John aged 14, Sarah aged 10 and Ann Aged 8. Two children - Eliza (born 1866) and William (born 1867) and mother Rose Ann (born abt 1836) did not accompany them. As per James and Rose Ann's marriage certificate, Rose Ann's father was named John and he was a Heckler. At the time of the marriage, both were living in Desertcreat. As per James' Australian death certificate his parents were James Lindsay (a Roper) and MaryTaylor. Any information anyone can find about James or Rose Ann's ancestors would be greatly appreciated. It is so hard do genealogy from the other side of the world. BTW Rose Ann's name has been spelled so many different ways eg. Menary, Manery, McNair - you get the picture.

    I see that the 1856 marriage was a Registry Office marriage. That hints at it being a mixed marriage.

    You would need to search church records to trace James & Rose’s baptism and their parents. (Statutory registration of non RC marriages started in 1845, RC in 1864. So the parents marriage won’t be in the stat records. You might find them in church records, if you can locate the right church).

    Griffiths Valuation for 1859 lists James Lindsay in plot 2c in Gortagowan which was an agricultural labourer’s cottage and garden on John McKeever’s farm. Today that farm is at the junction of Killygarvan and Dungannon roads 2 or 3 miles south of Cookstown.

    The revaluation records take the 1859 information forward. They show that the property remained in James name until between 1860 & 1863 when Jane Purvis replaced him as tenant.

    Rose Ann’s family were not listed in Gortagowan. That could mean they didn’t live there at all or that they had moved away by 1859.

    The following church records exist for Desertcreat. Church of Ireland start in 1812, Presbyterian in 1863, Reformed Presbyterian 1844 and RC in 1827.  The RC parish records are on-line free on the National Library site:

    If you want to check the other denominations, there are copies of them in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. If you can’t get there in person you may need to employ a researcher.

    I see the likely births of 3 of the children in the GRONI indexes, all registered in Cookstown:

    Sarah 2.10.1864 mothers mn given as Manery

    Eliza 4.2.1866 mother’s mn given as Nearie

    William 9.10.1867 mothers mn given as Maheerey
