John McEntyre born about 1804, and his wife Mary (nee Bell), born about 1800, were Assisted Immigrant Passengers on the "Rodney" arriving in Australia in 1854 along with six children.  Most of the children were born at Sixmilescross. John and Mary married in 1822 in Castle Caulfield, Tyrone, Ireland.    The family were Presbyterian and John was listed as a Farmer when arriving in Australia.

John's parents were Andrew McEntyre and Elizabeth Steenson and Mary's parents were William Bell and Anna.

The family settled in Picton, New South Wales, Australia, were John died aged 54 in 1858.    Mary moved with her children to Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, where she died aged 84 in 1884.

Any information on the McEntyre / McEntire family would be appreciated.

  • Tracey,

I had a look in the tithe applotment records for Desertcreat in 1825. A farmer or anyone with a bit of land would be listed in the tithes. I don’t see any McEntyre family in Gortavale at that time. Nor is there one in Griffiths Valuation in 1859. The nearest were 3 McEntyre farms in Cady and one in Gortagowan, both of which are near to Gortagale, and so might be connected.

All those families had left those townlands by the time of the 1901 census though.

    I noted this probate abstract:

The Will of Robert M'Entire late of Cady County Tyrone Retired Farmer who died 19 May 1893 at same place was proved at Armagh by Mervyn Stewart Patterson of Tullyard said County Land Agent the sole Executor.

The nearest Presbyterian churches are probably Sandholes and Sixmilecross. Unfortunately Sandholes has no records prior to 1863 (baptisms) and 1845 (marriages), and Sixmilecross lost all its pre 1900 records in a fire. Presbyterians don’t keep burial records.

If the McEntyre family was Presbyterian, then they probably arived in the area from Scotland in the 1600s, either as part of the Plantation or fleeing famine there in the 1690s.
