  • hi seumas

    my name is joe gallagher.

i have a record of baptism for my grandfathers sister anna gallagher 4-mar 1873 the sponsers are listed as charles mcgowan and "Mrs. Rouse". i have looked into the name rouse a little in tyrone/leckpatrick there are 42 rouses born from 1870 to 1921, 18 marriages from 1864 to 1913, two deaths 1870 and 1880. 13 gravestone inscriptions. 3 rouses in griffiths valuation for tyrone all in glenmornan, owenreagh a townland a few miles east of strabane. 32 rouses in the census 1901 with 2 families in strabane one in puddly alley the other in markethouse street, also famlies in owenreagh, lagavadder, and knocknahorna.

since the entry is listed as Mrs. rouse  i am not sure if she was a friend/family member.  or a worker at the church where she just stood in as sponser.

as the lady said a little more information would be helpful.

let me know if you have more info to narrow things down a bit.

  • Hi Joe

Thanks for the info & apologies for taking so long to reply.

I think perhaps there were probably family ties between the families, "Godparents" were not normally someone not close to the family.
In the 1911 census I found this info at #12 Canal Street Strabane

  • hi seumas

got some further info for you

    1. bernard gallagher and family were at #5  lifford new rd, strabane in 1901 . bernard's age listed as 68 mary jane not in house that night. there is christine, frances (male), ellen, eugene, joseph, sarah, and john.

    2. the rouses in 1901 were at #13 market house st. father daniel 43, wife mary 45, james 11 and daniel 8. james is the one married to mary jane gallagher.

    3. james rouse married mary jane gallagher in 1907 or 1908 and gave birth to james 1909, alice maud 1911, mary ellen 1913, daniel 1913, sarah teresa 1915, and bernard 1918.  could not find their record of marriage yet.

    4. alice maud hassen nee: gallagher appears to be maryjanes older sister was not in the house on 1901 census night either. found no record of charolett or alices marriage.

only the people in the house the night of the census were recorded.

    gets thicker

5 in 1901 there is a 15 year old alice gallagher (sister-in-law) at #11 georges st., omagh town, tyrone. james donnelly is head of house and mary wife. found marriage of james donnelly and mary gallagher in 1891 that gives bernard 9 children. but the 1911 census said christine had 15 children 7 living so joseph and ellen died between 1901 and 1911.

    6. in 1901 census there is a mary jane gallagher at #78 main street strabane where she is listed as a servant for william patrick quigley

this bernard could have been a brother to my great grandfather william but the only connection is the name rouse as a Godparent when i looked at the actual letter i got from the parish the name was May Rouse. another site has it listed as Mrs. rouse.

this is just an interesting stretch here follow this. in digging the daniel rouse and mary from #2 above were married in 1878 mary's maiden name was murry.  my william gallagher married a mary murry and there is a death record for a william gallagher in 1878 that i have not connected maybe my mary murry remarried daniel rouse in 1878.  but for this to work daniels mary was 45 in 1901 therefore born in 1856 and could not have given birth to andrew gallagher in 1864 interesting though.

does any of this connect to your family grandparent maybe james, daniel, or bernard.   sons of mary jane rouse nee:gallagher  and james rouse????? let me know.

i previousally established that the james rouse that married mary jane gallagher.  was son of a daniel rouse and his mother was mary rouse nee:murry.

this is the info on the murry family attached.  showing that daughter mary married a Rouse and mary's parents and siblings.

  • hi

alice maud hassen nee: gallagher married thomas hassen/hasson in 1909.

their child charlotte christina (after grandmother) was born in 1910.

the murry family bernard (barny) and catherine (kitty) are in griffiths valuation 1859 tract #23 glencoppogagh. however they were no longer on tract #23 or anywhere in glencoppogagh in 1872 the land turned over to a non family member.
