Catherine Donnelly was born abt. 1844 in Caneese, d. 13 August 1924 in Philadelphia, PA, USA

Their children were: Arthur, b. 8 Sept 1868 in Derry; Mary, b. 17 April 1870 in Ireland; Sara, b. abt 1875 in Barrow-in-Furness, UK; Charles J. b. 31 Jan 1875 in Barrow-in-Furness, UK; Catherine, b. abt 1878 in Barrow-in-Furness, UK; Patrick Joseph (my grandfather), b. 4 Jan 1883 in Barrow-in-Furness, d. 8 Dec 1959 in Brookline, PA, USA; Francis, b. 11 Dec 1884 in Barrow-in-Furness, UK.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

  • Thank you very much for any help that you can provide.  I did check Griffiths and they do appear on the list.  I have also found them in census records.  I can provide pdf's if it would be helpful.

    Thanks again,

    Jim McCann

I just signed up on irelandxo and read your messages.  One of my lines is also Lissan - McCrory/Mitchell, McCrory/Devlin.

McCrorys also residents of Ballybriest. I recognize the McCann and Donnelly families from my own research which includes family in Canees.  Have you encountered Fr. Charley McCann in your research?  He may be of help to you as his family also from Ballybriest and surrounds.  He has done great research in recording gravestones at the graveyard.  His family shirtails into mine - I would guess most assuredly yours.  I haven't communicated with Charley in some time.  He is/was located in Maryland.  I will dig out my last address for him and send to you. Perhaps researching Maryland diocesan parish priests would also turn up Charley's current parish/whereabouts.

Also, regarding your McCann/Donnelly marriage certificate - the witnesses, Arthur McCann and McGlone are names I'm familiar with. I am not certain without a 'dig' but believe Arthur McCann was Charley's grandfather or... and the McGlone family is a direct relative to him.  May even be his mother's side.

It was one of my great grandmothers on my mother's side who was born in Ballybriest in 1843, emigrated to PA in mid 1860's, then on to Nevada and Utah (where I was born). She had two sisters that also emigrated later and lived their lives in Philadelphia. "Found' granddaughter of one several years ago and we stay in touch. My line of McCrory still in and around Ballybriest, Tullynure, Cookstown, Stewartstown.

If I can be of any help, please do give a yell.  Have piles of 'notes' I can reference to see if come up with anything on your families.

Just recalled - one of my McCrory relatives is/was married to a Donnelly (Frank if I remember right). She died within the last few years.

  • Hello, Rory

I'm brand spanking new to irelandxo just having registered. I read Jim's search message and your reply to Jim.  I am pasting it herewith just as an fyi should be interested.  I am wondering, however, are you located in Lissan Parish currently or are you, too, researching ancestors from there?   I have had great luck in researching my McCrory line but have been facing the brick wall on g-g-grandmother, surname Mitchell, and g-g-g-grandmother, surname Devlin for decades!  Perhaps you have some suggestions for looking under some rock that I haven't turned over. Mccrory relative (since passed) 'recalled' a Betty Mitchell as a housekeeper for one of the brothers of her husband, but she seemed to have been written off for the most part by the family.  I suspect she may have been 'from the wrong side of the tracks' as I have contacted likely Mitchels in the area who seem to not want to make an association to her.

Nice to have contact with others with interest/connections to Lissan.  Following is message sent to Jim

  • Hi Bill,

Thanks for contacting me.  I'm also new to this grouup.  I am attaching a tree listing some of my McCann details.  If any look familiar, I can send more details if you want them.  Any information you would be willing to share would be appreicated.  Based on your comments, it appears that Charley may be the answer to my brick wall research.  Could you either send me his contact information or ask him to contact me?

Thanks for any help you can give me on the McCann, Donnelly, McGurk, and McGlone lines.

  • Hi Jim,

Great to hear from you. Fun having another Ballybriest 'native' in the fold.  Yes, I'm certain Charley (Fr.) would be of immense help to you as looking over your tree, it's pretty evident from the christian names that you are of the same family.  also, you mention in your email the surname McGurk. Another familiar name and one that I recall as being in Charley's family. Have had a 'streak' of decent weather here the past two days and I've been pounding away outside in an attempt to catch up with 'dirt' work.  aopologize that I haven't dug into the genealogy boxes to get info for you yet. I will get that done this aftgernoon and get back to you with anything that I think might be of interest. I believe that I have buried somewhere, Charley's transcription of the gravestone inscriptions at Lissan. Might be enlightening for you.

    Later...

    Bill

I'm still queezy about there not being a 'send' button on here and thus that it actually posts so I will also email the message

Forget the attachment to this - tried to attach and the file is too large for this site.  Need your personal email address to get it to ya.........

I just sent an email (off this link) containing a lot of data on your families.  Intended to attach Fr. Charley's transcription of Lissan cemetery gravestones but I can't find any way available on here to to attach to an email.  Therefore, the attachment is included herewith.

You and I are going to become very familiar for the next while as I filter through all my piles and piles of notes.  Would you mind emailing me your direct email address (which doesn't appear anywhere on this site). I sent you mine in the email just sent.  This link method is limited.

    Thanks

Hope you find some if not lots of value in the info.

    Bill

oh JC, now I hope it's in an accepted format!  It may get sent twice as I save to a jpeg or something!
