I am trying to find my family history on my Dad's side. I have learned that my nanna 'Patricia Lovett's' mother was from Gortmore, Omagh, County Tyrone. I originally thought it was Armagh.

Her name was Mary Millicent Lovett. All I know is that Mary's father may have been a Sergeant in the Army and I have learned that his name is possibly John Lovett.

My Nanna was born in Little Torrington, Devon in 1925.

Mary was born in County Omagh 1902, she passed away in 1976 in Gloucester, England.

Can anyone help me? I would love to know if I have any more family that are still in the area.

  • Hi Jessica,

I was able to find a baptism of Mary Millicent Lovett, she was born 27-Oct-1902  at 4.06 AM  in Gortmore Omagh co. Tyrone and baptised 24-Nov-1902, father John Lovett mother Ellen Talfree, father was a soldier and Mary Millicent was one of a set of twins  according to a note on the baptism cert. Her twin sister was Theresa Frances and born at 8.06 Am. There are no other children born to this couple not in Ireland anyway, also no marriage in Ireland for John Lovett and Ellen Talfree.

    Hope this helps

  • That's amazing Anne, thank you!

Someone had found me a Census Record from 1901.

At the time there was a John Lovett, Ellen Lovett, Ellen Mary lovett (Daughter) and John Joseph Lovett (son).

This is of course was before my Great Grandma was born. It says the children were born in Tyrone.

Also on the Census it states that Ellen was born in England, so I am wondering if they were married there.

  • Anne,

Do you by any chance have a copy of the baptism certificate?

  • Hello all - John Joseph was my great grandfather.

From what I have managed to find out you are right they were a Military family and spent time in India (at least one child was born there) and in England where they settled in Wiltshire and still have descendants.

I believe some of the family ended up in Canada too but unfortunately never managed to find out much from my Grandfather before he passed - he always used to tell me stories that his cousins who were moonshine runners across the Canada/America border but I don't know how true that is!

Believe John and Ellen married in Portsea, Southsea, City of Portsmouth, England, United Kingdom in 1892.

Hope that helps - happy to share more.
