I am looking for McIver family history from Pomeroy in County Tyrone.     Father is Patrick McIver (born around 1840) married to Mary Murphy. Their children were Patrick (born 1860), Peter (born 1866), Jphn P. (born 1871, Matthew (born 1873) and Joseph (born 1877). I only know that thw children came to America and settled in New York City.  Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Statutory birth registration started in Ireland in 1864 so I can?t easily search for Patrick?s birth. However I found the following children to the couple, post 1864:

    Peter 19.8.1866

    Susanna 3.12.1868 (died 31.12.1870)

    John 25.3.1871

    Matthew 26.9.1873

    Joseph 8.1.1876

All births registered in Cookstown. You can view the certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the ?search registrations? option: https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk (You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs ?2 to a view a certificate).

If you then post the townland(s) where the family were living for some of these births, together with Patrick senior?s occupation, I?ll try and see what other information I can find for you on them. I can?t search for Patrick & Mary in the Irish censuses at present as the site is down.

  • Yes the censuses are back on line. If you checked out the births I gave, you’ll see that at least the last 2 children were born in Waterard townland. That’s also known as Oughterard.  This appears to be Mary and a daughter in the 1901 census:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/The_Rock/Oughterard/1731691/

    and in 1911:

The Valuation revision records show the Oughterard property as being plot 10a which was a house and 1 acre of land. Patrick McKeever (as he is recorded there) acquired it in 1876 and it passed to Mary’s name in 1891, suggesting Patrick died around then. Possible death for him on 15.5.1890 aged 56, registered in Cookstown. You need to pay to view the certificate. It's available to view on the GRONI site for £2.50 (sterling).

Daughter Rose was born in Co Down for some reason. However I can’t find a birth cert for her.

Possible death for Mary McIvor registered in Cookstown 20.1.1925, aged 87. You would need to pay to view the certificate to be sure it’s the right one.

  • Not sure where you stand on this after five years, but I've attached Susanna McIvor's birth and death records which add a couple of details, including that Peter was a carpenter, that an Isabella McIver was present at her birth, and that a Terrence McIvor was present at her death. Presumably these are relatives. I came across these while researching William McIvor (1782-1874) of Pomeroy and his possible wife Mary McIvor (1790-1895), who died in Lisdillon in Londonderry (the birth and death dates come from their death registrations, which are available for free at IrishGenealogy.ie). I think William was the father of my great-great-grandfather John (born 1811, probably in Bracky); Pomeroy is the next parish over. It may be possible that William is also Patrick's grandfather.

  • Yes, though I haven't done much lately. I believe I'm at a dead end. My current thinking is that my great-grandfather, John, was born in late 1844 in Bracky, Termonmaguirk, East Omagh, Tyrone, to John McIver (born 1811) and Anna Robinson (born 1822 and likely his second wife). William may be John's father, but I can't prove it. John (the 1844 one) had several other siblings who emigrated to Philadelphia in 1852, including William (1831), Jane (1833), who married Thomas Beardwood), Daniel (1836), and Thomas (1841)  Younger siblings apparently remained in Ireland with Anne. John (the 1811 one) appears to have accompanied the older children to Philadelphia, but then returned to Ireland (as some of the younger children were born after 1852). This strikes me as unusual, but he had left his second wife and younger children in Ireland and perhaps decided to return there as the American Civil War loomed. Complicating the issue, I can't find definitive records of William, Daniel, or 1811 John in either Ireland or America, where the names are common enough that I can't prove which ones are "mine." It's possible William or Daniel died in the Civil War. I do know that Anne was a daughter of James and Jane Robinson born in Tullywiggen, Derryloran, Tyrone.
