  • Mike,

The childrens births are all likely to be be before the start of statutory birth registration (1864) and so you willneed to rely on church baptism reocrds, if they have survived. Do you know what denomination the fmaily were and where they attended church?

  • Mike,

There appear to be 2 Church of Ireland churches within the parish ? One in Pomeroy and the other at Altdesert. Unfortunately neither has any records before 1876. All that remains is this:

Altdesert (records in local custody, ie held by the Rector): Baptisms, 1877-; marriages, 1846-; burials, 1877-; vestry minutes, 1852-.

Pomeroy (again in local custody): Baptisms, 1876-; marriages, 1845-; burials, 1876-; Sunday School roll book, 1899-1915.

In the 1880s, the Church of Ireland ordered its Ministers to send their older records to the Public Record Office in Dublin for safekeeping. Unfortunately there was a major fire in that building during the civil war in 1922 and the records were all lost (along with some of the censuses etc). Not every church had sent their records to Dublin and some had duplicates, so about 50% survive, but unfortunately in your case the records are gone.

Marriages there from April 1845 onwards still exist because a duplicate copy was sent to the civil registrar but for births, it was 1864 before they were entered into the stat records, so unless someone has a family bible or other documentation on the family, it will be hard to find out how many children this couple had.

Corkhill falls within Dungannon civil registration district. I searched for Gilpin marriages 1845 ? 1870 registered in Dungannon on Family search (Irish civil indexes) and there were 13 in that period. A photocopy of each would cost 4 euros. If you have deep enough pockets you could order them all and see if they relate to your family. If John & Elizabeth had more children who remained in Ireland, then I imagine some might. The townland and father?s name on the cert should help establish which are yours.

I looked for their own marriage but cannot see it and presume they married before 1st April 1845. I did see one Elizabeth Buchanan marriage in 1845 who married a John but his surname does not appear to be Gilpin. The details are on the Emerald Ancestors site if you feel like paying to see: http://www.emeraldancestors.com/

  • Hello Elwyn,     (  Of Ahohill, Co. Antrim.  )

I am Robert Watt who went to school at Crossdernott  ( about 4 miles from Pomeroy village)

I feel I must point out a correction to yourself and to other readers that the 2 Church of Ireland Churches in the parish of Pomeroy are several miles apart,                                                                                                                                                 But I have read in these messages that one Church was at Pomeroy and the other was at Altdesert,                                      This is incorrect because  Altdesert  Church  IS the Church at Pomeroy,                                                                                          The Church of Ireland Church at Crossdernott is called All Saints.
