I am searching for the family of John McIver born abt.  8 February 1841, Brackey, Tyrone, Ireland. His father is Daniel McIver born abt. 1805 Northern Ireland, I do not know the mother.

John married Isabella Anderson on 1 February 1876 at the Registry Office - District of Poplar - County Middlesex UK.

Isabella father is Thomas Anderson born abt 1804 and could have died abt 1879

Isabella Anderson born 1853 in Lissen Ireland.

They sailed for New Zealand the “Countess of Kintore” from Gravesend to Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand, on 2nd February 1876

Isabella was pregnant at the time of sailing, as their 1st child Robert, was born on board while the ship was in quarantine at Ripa Island, (now known as Quail Island) in Lyttelton Harbour.

The above information I have got from their marriage certificate.

I don’t know if religion came into the equation or not but have found there are some RC records and birth records for a brother of John named Joseph or they left Ireland because of Isabella’s pregnancy.

Any help would be appreciated. Judy McIver nee Scott

  • Are you sure your ancestor was born in Tyrone? According to a transcription found at RootsIreland, a John McIver was baptized a Catholic on 20 Feb 1841, unfortunately in the Union Workhouse in Belfast, Co. Antrim. (You have a birth date of about 8 Feb.)

His parents were Daniel McIver and Sarah McLarnon.
Sponsors were Catherine McIver and James McGerraghty

    I hope this helps.

    Thank your for your information,

I have seen the information you wrote about and on searching and didnt take much notice of this as I didnt have a wife for Daniel McIver

I do have another record of a baptism at St Patrick's, Belfast, Antrim, Ireland on 20th February 1841.

The family here in New Zealand we brought up in the Anglican faith.  I did ask the youngest Aunt why were they were brought Anglican and her reply was becuase that is what Mum was.   The farm owners (Griggs) where they lived and worked were Anglican and had a chaple on the property. (this might be the reason)

I do have another person (Lyons) here who keeps telling me that she is related, but as I do not have the names of any other siblings John McIver,  I did not place much importants on this.

A marriage record that I have is:-

    October 27 1859

Joseph McIver full age bachelor farmer Brackey, Parish of Termonmaguirke. Father Daniel McIver farmer.

Letittia Lyons 15 years spinster Drumnakilly. Father Robt. Lyons farmer.

Witnesses. Charles Mitchell anf Robert Kyle.

I do have family relations here in New Zealand who insist that they have the right McIver family in Ireland and insist that what they have is correct, and have published this information on the web.  I do not consider what they have done is correct until such time one can verify the info being correct I do not think this is right.

Many thanks for what you have found for me.

  • Judy, This may confuse things more than help  My second great Aunt was Letitia Lyons who married Joseph McIver (1838-1884).  I believe Joseph may have been Johns brother. I believe Josephs Father was Daniel Mc Iver a farmer from Brackey, Tyrone.  I don't know his wife's full name but her first name may have been Martha born in 1818 in Brackey.  They may have been married in 1837.  I don't know what faith Joseph was but Letitia Lyons was Church of Ireland I think .  Joseph and Letitia had a daughter Mary Letitia who married a Thomas Pole and  immigrated to Australia.
