I am researching my family history, specifically my grandfather Edward Hayes. I knew he was born on 24th May 1896 in Co.Waterford but I did not know which parish. After a great deal of help from one of your volunteers I was able to establish that he was born at 24 Queen Street Portlaw and that his mother was called Margaret Hayes and his grandmother was Julia Hayes. There is no father shown on the birth certificate.

I believe that Portlaw is in the parish of Clonagam although I am by no means certain of this as I find the local government structure in Ireland quite confusing! I have been able to establish certain facts about the family through my Ancestry account and the information I have is as follows:

Edward Hayes born 24th May 1896 24 Queen St. Portlaw

Mother Margaret Hayes born 31st January 1874.Died Jul-Sep 1900 Carrick-on-Suir.

Grandmother Julia Hayes (nee Walsh) born 1831 Clonan, Co.Tipperary

Grandfather Michael Hayes - no further information found

Children of Michael and Julia Hayes - apart from Margaret mentioned above

- Mary Hayes born c. 1875 in Co.Waterford married Martin Lyons in Portlaw on 23 Jan 1907

- Martin Hayes born 1 Dec 1870 in Kilmeadan Co.Waterford

William Hayes born c.1866 in Co.Waterford

Thomas Hayes born 2 April1865 in Kilmeadan

I have also found the following additional information in the Irish census records

!901 census Julia Hayes,Mary Hayes and Eddy Miller (aged 4) lived at 24 Queens Street,Portlaw. I do not understand why the name Miller is shown and not Hayes if this was my grandfather.

1911 census shows Edward Hayes (aged 14) living with the Lyons family at 6 Stonehouse Kilmeadan.

1901 census shows a William Hayes and family living at 8 Knockane Portlaw and 1911 census shows the same family living at 2 Darrigal Kilmeadan

I should add that my grandfather Edward Hayes left Ireland prior to 1918 and spent the rest of his life in UK and USA.

It would appear that most of the Hayes family spent most of their lives in the Portlaw area and if there is any additional information you can provide on any of the family members from the local parish records it would be very much appreciated.

Best Regards

Roger Hayes

  • Roger:

I went back and found your prior message in March and your back and forth with Shanew147 who assisted you.

Portlaw is in the civil parish of Clonagam.

Since the family was RC, I would suggest that you wait until July 8th when the National Library of Ireland plans to place all RC parish registers online for free searching. I would review the register for Portlaw RC parish and other pertinent parish register.

  • Hi, Roger! I am a descendant of Margaret Hayes' brother, Thomas. He and their older brother, Edmund (you are missing a few of their siblings on the list above), moved to Saint Louis, Missouri, USA. I would love to exchange Hayes family history info with you.
