  • Jo,

Your request is a bit non-specific. What mountain are you looking for?

  • Yesterday I tried to enter ancestor information: Family of  John Kirby (parents ?) & Mary Foley (parents David Foley & Mary Hennessey).  The couple was married Tallow RC Church, 16 Feb 1858.  Their first 6 children (Mary b. Nov 1858, Margaret b. June 1860, William b. Apr 1862, Johanna b. May 1864, David b. Aug 1866, John b. Jan 1869).  Children were born in various Ballyduff townlands; some christened in Tallow & others inn  Ballyduff.

I think that the query about Mountain must have somehow got mixed in.  My search for information was centered on my Kirby/Foley ancestors, not a Mountain.

    Hi Janet,

Things certainly got mixed up there. I found their marriage cert. It is 8km from Tallow to Ballyduff so maybe they lived somewhere in between? It said in one place that they lived in Coolagoody. I sent you the historic map but could not locate Coola goody, nor in the index of townlands. It may have been a sub-townland that is now forgotten. I also sent you records of their children.

I found what I think is the best guess for John's parents. They are Mary and John which are the names of their first two kids.

I think you can find out more  by pursuing these leads.

  • Thank You Geraldine for your reply & info.  As I mentioned the children born in the Ballyduff area were the first 6.  By 1870 the family moved to Co Cork. where another 6 chldren were born.  The family seemed to move to a different townland every 2 years as births were 2 years apart.  As in Waterford the family moved to different townlands, do you think that John was working for the Duke of Devonshire as the townland locations seem to be in areas that he owned?   My direct ancestor, Catherine E. Kirby b. Ballymacsimon, Ballynoe, June 1870, christened Conna RC Church; Thomas, b. Ballylusky Ballynoe,  b. May 1872, c. Conna; James b.Castlelyons 1874, c. Castlelyons; Michael b.Newtown 1876, c. Conna; Richard b/c. Fermoy Union Workhouse 1879, residence Carrigabrick; Allice b/c Fermoy Union Workhouse 1881, residence Carrigabrick.

The family moved to Boston Massachusetts U.S.A. individually during the 1880s.  Mary Foley Kirby's death record (1898) indicated her parents names (David &Mary).   John's death record indicated that his father was John, but his mother's name was unknown.   The first born boy was William b. Ballyduff 1862, who I think may be John's father.

I appreciate any work you do to help me learn more about my family.  Janet

  • I too have relatives from Waterford by the name of Kirby.  They were living in Kill Parish (I believe Knockmahon area) when Edward (Edmund) Kirby and Margaret Blake were married  20 May 1855.  I don't have a birth for Edward, we think around 1820. His wife, Margaret was born 24 Nov 1832 in Dungarvan and her parents were John Blake and Catherine Murphey, They went on to have Bridget (1856), David (1857) John 1860-1865), Catherine (1863-1864), Michael (1865), all born in Kill Parish.  Edward left for America in 1867, left family in workhouse and sent passage in 1868 for his wife and youngest child leaving Bridget and Michael in the workhouse until the following year when he sent passage for them.  They settled in Rockaway, New Jersey where Catherine Kirby was born in 1871 and moved to Austin, Nevada in 1874 for mining and their last daughter Margaret was born in 1876.  I don't know Edward (Edmunds) father or mother or if they were originally from the Waterford area. I[m not sure if there could be a connection between these Kirby's. If you have any information on this I would love to hear more.

    Thank you Christy

    Hi Janet,

I was able to go further back. You are correct. Their first son was William. and they seemed to have alternated William and John in the generations.

  • Thank you to both of you.  Geraldine, where do we go next?  I think that John's grandfather, William, was likely born 1700s and his father, John, was like born early1800s.  Is there any way of searching for ancestrors during that time?  Christy, the time line of your Kirbys seem to be in line with mine.   I think both John & Mary were both born 1820-1840.  I think Mary was born Waterford, but John may have been born in East Cork - Baronies/Unions of townlands that I mentioned.  I

  • I cannot help with the family but I note therre is an area (townland?)  called Mountainrea on old maps.  It would be east of another small townland called Tooradoo,  north of Ballyduff with Talow a bit further south.  If "mountain" was written as a location for some of your ancestors, perhaps they meant Mountainrea.

    Janet,

Did you look at the file I sent you, showing William born in 1805? That's probably as far back as I can go, but maybe you can research further back. I did find a younger brother for William born in 1814. His name was John. I believe they are your direct ancestors.

    Christy,

I could not find your Edmund/Edward.  I don't think he is a close relative of Janet's family.

  • I'm sorry Geraldine & Christy for such a delayed response. I was so excited to be able to learn more about my Kirby/Foley family, but came across a tech problem.  My problem has been trying to open the docxs you have sent me.  It seems that they were written in microsoft word 7, which has been up dated & ,of course, changed.  When opened there is nothing on either page.  After trying to open the docxs, I've decided to seek help.  I'll keep you up to date on what can be done.

  • Hi,  The problem was with my version of microsoft office, so my helper downloaded Open Office 4.1.8.  Now I am able to open Docx.  Reading these vital records was wonderful.  I thank you so much.   I will continue to serach the Kerby family because they seem to have been on the move regularly.  Because of that, I was unable to verify where John's family originatred.  Now I'll also search for my Foley family; I'm pretty sure they came from Ballyduff/Lismore area.

    Thank you again, Geraldine
