It is wonderful to have found this page. I visited the site (land) of my great grand mother's childhood home in Kinnegad over thirty years ago and am now I am working on my family tree I am revisiting those memories. My GGmother was Catherine Reilly, her father Patrick Reilly and mother Anne Connor. Catherine was born on the 27 January 1891 and immigrated to Australia in 1913. Many of our family have visited Ireland and extended family but we know little of Catherines parents and siblings. Hopefully we will eventually find out more details in the future and I look forward to communicating with anyone who woud like to chat.

  • I couldn't tell if you had the 1901 and 1911 census records for your family so I posted below. Patrick Reilly died before 1901. I looked for a death index record but there were at least 10 Patrick Reillys who died between 1890 and 1901 in the Mullingar registration district. Also, Catherine was not listed with the family in 1911. I looked for her but only found a 21 year old Catherine working as a servant in a family quite a distance away from Kinnegad.

  • Hello Roger,

thank you for your interest. I did find both these census records - its wonderful that they are available as I have found Irish records a bit trickier to find than English and USA ones. (Australian ones aren't very forthcoming either as they do not release census records!)

I did overlook the fact that Catherine wasn't on the 1911 one.  I know my great grand father Edward Francis Mulligan lived in Dublin. They married in Australia in 1913 after she immigrated. However one aunt told me that she believed they were married in Ireland. Perhaps this was not recognised in Australia? Edward immigrated before her, with his mother (?) and brother Joseph but I have been unable to find records of this. My first record for him is their Australian marriage.

Perhaps she had moved to Dublin as she must have known him before traveling to Australia to marry him. Or perhaps they met where she was working. I will have to look up the 1911 census again and try and locate her at that time.

Thanks for prompting me with my oversight.
