Looking for info on Richard John Talbot and Eliza Macintosh.  Their son Richard born 1844 married Hannah Davy who died in 1872.  Richard emigrated to New Zealand with new wife Harriet Harlond sometime  after Hannah died in 1872

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Do you know where in Westmeath they lived-were born? Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or place name, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.

Do you have any documentation, official or unofficial, belonging to the family that mentions a more specific place?

Have you looked into Richard?s emigration much? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure, so you may be able to find more information here-and maybe even an exact place of origin. There are lots of books and documents available about the Irish emigration to NZ. There is a website you could look at: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/irish/2 for information about the Irish in New Zealand.

You could also try searching for both Richards in Griffith?s Valuation. This is a land property survey that was carried out between 1848 and 1864. Although it doesn?t offer any genealogical information it can be used to tie a person to a specific place. You can search this here:

Another useful website is www.familysearch.org . This is a huge database of genealogical records complied by the Church of the Latter Day Saints. If you can find some record of them here it may give you a parish name.

Some other websites which you may help are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

I hope that this is helpful. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

  • Hi,

I have now found a copy of the Baptismal Register of a church in Collinstown for Richard Talbot, born 1846,  abode  Barbavilla, and his father John's occupation is a Steward.  Jonh's wife is Eliza.  I think Eliza's maiden name was McIntosj, as this name has been used as subsequent second names.

    Thankyou

    Wendy.
