I am searching for my Irish Roots.  My great grandmother was baptized in St Mary's church parish of Streete diocese of Ardagh in Westmeath on December 2, 1860.  Her name was Margaret Gilligan born to James Gilligan and Bridget Farrell . I am looking for any family connection on Gilligan or Farrell side.  I know Margaret had at least 3 siblings James born 1870 Nov 2 and Patrick and Mary. I don't have dates of birth for Patrick or Mary. I appreciate any help you might have. Thank you from the USA

  • Hi Kimberley

I searched births/baptisms on www.rootsireland.ie/ for children of James Gilligan and Bridget Farrell with no years specified but only got 3 matches: Mary 1856 Margaret 1860 & Patrick 1864

rootsireland.ie/ also has 2 records of the marriage of James & Bridget in Westmeath in 1856; this will have the parish and MAY have parents' names on it to help you go back further.

You might also want to have a look on Griffiths Valuation and Tithe Applotments (free online) for Gilligans and Farrells in Westmeath.

  • Kimberley:

I went to www.familysearch.org but only found a baptismal index record for James which you already have.

The record indicates that James was baptized in Co. Longford. There is a Street civil parish in Co. Longford as well as a Street parish in Co. Westmeath and I believe they are adjacent. You may have other evidence that identifies that the family lived in Westmeath but it is also possible they were in Longford.

I also found a civil death index record for a James Gilligan who died in 1895 in the Mullingar registration district. Not sure if this is for your GGGF. You would need to write to the General Register Office (GRO) and request a copy which would cost around 4 euros. If you want to contact the GRO let me know and I will explain the process.

  • Dear Kevin,

I was so excited to hear from someone who actually walks the streets my Great Great Grandmother walked.  I would appreciate any help you have time for. Can I ask a few questions first? Is St Mary's Church still standing? I have looked for photographs of it but was not able to find it. It would have to be almost 150 years old. Do you have a physical address where it was stood ? Is the parish of Streete in the city of Westmeath? Are the other parishes in Westmeath?

My research shows that James Gilligan and Brigid Farrell where married Rathowen parish is that close to Westmeath. It seems Brigid Farrell was raised in Rathowen parish since that was where they got married.

I have a copy of Margaret Gilligan's baptism certificate she was baptized on 2 December 1860. Our family stories tell she had two sisters both named Mary one of them was baptized on 31 October 1856. She also had possibly one or two brothers the only name I have is Patrick. Also James Gilligan their father was baptized in parish of Streete 1826. I have no information on his parents names but it is possible it is on his baptism certificate.

Margaret immigrated to the United States some time between 1874 and 1887. Do you know what port she might have departed from?

I've dreamed that one day I would walk the streets where my gg grandmother lived. Possibly see the church she was baptized in. Maybe meet distant relatives.  Is that too much to wish for? I am still hoping that wishes might come true. Thank you so much for your kindness. Do you have any family here in the USA? If you have any questions,I know I've given you a lot of information, I'd be happy to go over this again or send you copy of Margaret's baptism certificate if you'd like. Thanking you in advance.
