Hi, I am trying to trace descendants/relatives of John and Brigid Carstairs who lived in Ballyhoge. They were married, I believe, in 1906. I am named after their son Michael Carstairs who born 1919 and whose birth was registered in Enniscorthy. Michael was killed in action 1942 providing cover for Arctic convoys on the British naval ship HMS Somali. He was married to my late Aunt Marjorie from Sheerness, England. He died aged 23 and had no children. I would love to know whether he had siblings, cousins or other relatives whose descendants are still alive.

  • This looks to be John & Brigid in 1911:

I think the most likely marriage for this couple was between John Carstairs and Bridget Kavanagh, registered in Enniscorthy Jul ? Sept 1906, Vol 4, page 258. If you order a copy of that cert you may get information to take your research back.

This looks to be John in 1901:

I looked in the current Irish phone book. I cannot see any Carstairs in Wexford town or county. There are 5 in Wicklow.

  • Hi and thank you so much for this. This does indeed relate to the marriage of Michael Carstair's parents and confirms what I thought. It also suggests that the "boarder" referred to in the record (Laurence Kavanagh) may well have been Brigid's brother/other relative and gives me an additional line of enquiry. The 1911 record also suggests that John and Brigid had another child between 1906 & 1911, who may have had children assuming he/she survived, which the record doesn't confirm.

I very much appreciate the reference to the Eircom Directory, which gives more possible lines of enquiry that I will definitely follow up.

Once again, thank you. Really helpful.

    Regards, Michael
