I am searching for family of William Thomas Pierce (1798 - 1861) and Ellen (pos. Eleanor) Denby (1802 - 1863).  William was born  in Newtownbarry and Ellen was born in Ballyroebuck.  William and Ellen emigrated to Ontario, Canada, and we have genealogical records for their children and subsequent family in Canada and US.  I am looking for any Pierce or Denby family who may still be living in Ireland, i.e. brothers and sisters of William and Ellen.  I have been unable to locate the parents of William and Ellen. If anyone can help, even with a  place to look, that would be great.  Thanks.  Nancy Pierce

  • Nancy:

Ballyroebuck is in Kilrush civil parish and Newtownbarry is in St. Marys Newtownbarry civil parish. The two parishes are next to each other. The RC church records for both are in Bunclody and start in 1834 which is after the period you are looking for. If your family was not RC, I don't have any info on availability of records.

I did check the 1853 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for both parishes. There was a Robert Denby in Raheen townland, Kilrush parish. There were no Pierces in St. Marys Newtownbarry.

  • Thank you Roger.  I will try non-RC records and will check on the Robert Denby connection.  Thanks for helping out.

  • Hi Nancy. I'm also a descendant of William Thomas Pierce and Eleanor Denby. My father has been researching the Pierce family for years, and he believes William's father is Thomas, and his mother is a Jane, but I haven't been able to verify that myself. We descend from the Barry Pierce branch.

They emigrated to Canada with their children. My dad thinks that the two oldest, Edward and Jane, might be a brother and sister, which would make Barry the oldest. I'm not convinced, but it's possible.

Which branch are you from? It would be great to share our notes. My dad took over the research from his father, and I've taken over from my dad.

We will be in Co Wexford in July to celebrate my dad's 80th birthday. My dad has been a couple of times before and is in contact with the Pierce family we might be connected to, if he's right.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Hi Catherine,

Our family descended from William Pierce, who was the fourth child of William Thomas and Eleanor Pierce.  We received quite detailed family records of the children of William and Eleanor and their descendants and I was wondering if there were Pierces in Ireland that we are related to.  When I looked through my Dad's papers, it appears that William Pierce had a brother called Thomas, but that was all I could see.

My grandfather, Frederick Ivan Pierce, was born in Athens, Ontario.  Grandpa's father was George Manford Pierce, his father was Frederick Pierce, and his father was William Pierce, fourth son of William and Eleanor. Frederick Pierce owned an operated a hotel in Athens, Ontario and George Manford Pierce owned and operated a hotel in Bassano, Alberta.  Grandpa and Granny grew up in Bassano, and moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta and raised their 3 children.  My dad still lives in Medicine Hat.

It was very nice to hear from you.  I now have my Dad's Pierce family records and I was going to try to get them organized.  Dad wants to update the records with the new generations. I am thinking that it would be a good idea to get the records on line.  If I figure out how to do that, I'll let you know.
