  • The townland is listed on the 1851 Index and OSI maps as 'Loughnageer', and in Clongeen civil parish which is located just west of the town of Foulksmills, and about half way between New Ross and Wexford town. Loughnageer townland is in New Ross PLU and Registration district, so assuming they also married in that area, that's the district to check for their marriage on the BMD Index,

Do you have their children's names and approx. years of birth, or found the family on the 1901 and or 1911 census (assuming they were still in Ireland then) ?

The 1911 census indicates years married for couples, which helps narrow down the search for a possible marriage, and their place of birth can help also, especially if either came from out side Co. Wexford originally.

  • for reference - the following seems to be your Crowleys on the census returns - townland name mixedup  a little on the 1901 transcript :

1901 - Crowley household, Loughrager, Co. Wexford   1911 - Crowley household, Loughnageer townlad, Co. Wexford

All born Co. Wexford, and on the 1911 return Peter and Johanna have put that they are married 31 years, so about 1880.

  • likely marriage - a little later than they noted on the census, but the right district. Dates/ages etc were often not accurate, so this is close enough to be considered a good match :

    Name : Peter Crowley
    Event Type : Marriage
    Quarter and Year : Oct-Dec 1884
    Registration District : New Ross
    Volume 4 / Page 327

A Johanna Whelan appears with the same Index references, so a likely cross-match - i.e. one of the bride's appearing on the same page of the register.  A research marriage cert from the GRO (€ 4 ) would give you the full details - date and place of marriage, residences of the bride and groom at the time of marriage, father's names, occupations, names of witnesses etc.

If you are not familiar with how to order research certs let me know and I'll reoly with details..

  • Notes on ordering research certs (download the form online, but you send your order to the GRO by post or Fax) :

To order GRO research certs - download the order form from this link (MSWord document, Dept.of Social Protection or Welfare),

Print out a copy and enter your details in section 1, and your credit card details in section 3. Put the index references for the record you wish to order (name, record type, reg. district, record type, year/quarter, page & volume) in section 2. If you have several certs to order, you can print the references for these on a separate page and attach to the order form.

Ignore the irrelevant sections on the form such as exact date of birth etc, PPS number etc, the forms are more geared to modern official certs for legal purposes. In section 3 tick the 'photocopy' option to select research certs (€ 4). Post (or fax) the completed form to the GRO, the head office address is at the top of the form.

Certs are normally delivered by post, but you can opt for delivery by email by ticking the option in section 1 and including an email address.
