 Hi Folks,

My Grandaunt Margaret Fitzgerald was born in Lisbealad 09-01-1865. She married Daniel McCarthy on 11-09-1888. They had three children Mary Kate, Cornelius Gerald St.John and Margaret.

My Grandaunt died on the 19-12-1893 and Daniel remarried in 1895.

I don't have much information on Margaret, but I do know that Cornelius Gerald died on 27-07-1898 aged 7 years.

At the time of the 1911 Census Mary Kate was 21 years of age, single, a National Teacher and she lived with her Dad and his wife Kate in Carrigbaun.

I am trying to establish where Mary Kate may have worked. I do know that her Dad did teach in Derryclough N.S. for many years and I'm wondering if she worked there also?

If anybody out there has any information on that McCarthy / Fitzgerald family I would love to hear from them.

I am also trying to establish where they might be buried. I have searched the Drinagh and Drimoleague graveyards but with no luck so far.

Thank you so much

  • Dear Sirron

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in replying to your message.

As you can see from the link below, Drinagh is a Civil Parish in Co. Cork:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/townlands/index.cfm?fuseaction=TownlandsInCivil&civilparishid=228&civilparish=Drinagh&citycounty=Cork

Records for the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish of Drimoleague begin in 1817.

Have you already searched the sites below for a civil marriage records for Margaret so that you could find out the names of her parents?

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However, so far only Counties Dublin, Kerry, Carlow and parts of Cork have been covered.

In relation to her occupation, as her father was a teacher Mary Kate may also have taken that occupation. You can have a look at the collection in the National Archives Education Series Index, but unfortunately they are not available online as yet:

    http://www.nationalarchives.ie/topics/Nat_Schools/natschs.html

You could also contact Cork Past and Present. They may be in a position to tell you if a local history of the area has been published that might indicate Mary Kate's occupation as a teacher:

    http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/

Have you tried searching Historic Graves?

    http://historicgraves.com/familysearch_map

Cork Past and Present may be of assistance in relation to burials for the family as they will have local knowledge

Best of luck with your search

  • Hi Clare,

Thank you so much for your response to my query on the McCarthy / Fitzgerald family of Carrigbaun, Drinagh, Co. Cork.

I have tried most of the web sites that you have mentioned and I know for example that Margaret's parents were Richard Fitzgerald and Mary Grace of Lisbealad, Dunmanway. Margaret died in 1893 just 5 years after her marriage to Daniel McCarthy on 11/09/1888.

I suppose I am hoping that because Daniel was a Primary teacher in Derryclough N.S. and his daughter Mary Kate was also described as a Primary teacher in the 1911 Census, that somebody from that area might have some information that would be of interest to me. If there is anybody out there for example who may know where Mary Kate worked  as a teacher I would love to hear from them. Or if anybody knows anything about that McCarthy / Fitzgerald family I would love you to make contact.

I must have a look at the National Archives Education  Series Index in the coming weeks.

    Thanks again

    Sirron
