I am trying to find information about Owen Connolly and his family who lived in Enniscorthy during the latter half of 19th century. Owen is my 2x great grandfather, his son Nicholas Joseph (b.1889) is my great grandfather. Nicholas Joseph became a member of the IRA during the Civil War 1921-22, and was interned in Curragh Camp in Kildare. His father Owen was a Clerk of the Enniscorthy Union until his death in 1909. I am also looking for info on Eugene Connolly (b.1887), whom, I am finding, is very elusive, when it comes to figuring out his lifestory!

I am looking for any information for Owen, Nicholas Joseph or Eugene in particular, but info on anyone else in their family would be appreciated also, since it might lead me to find info on them too.

Thanks in advance.

Kiran.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Below are links to the 1901 and 1911 census records for the family. Eugene was there in 1901 but not in 1911. I did not find a Eugene Connolly anywhere in Ireland in 1911. My guess is that he emigrated.

I did find a civil marriage record for Owen Connolly and Marcella Murphy in April 1884. See third link below. You will have to sign-in to see the record. Owen was a widower so any children born after 1884 were Marcella's but the older children had a different mother.

  • Kiran,

the information that Roger has provided is (as usual) 100% right - my information is anything but and needs to be treated as such. I found a Eugene Connolly in the 1911 census - see below. He was born in Co Wexford but other than that I have no idea if he is the Eugene you are looking for.

Thanks! Looks like the right Eugene! I must have misspelled Eugene Connolly when I made my 1911 search.

  • Thanks Jim and Roger for finding out that information for me. I do know Owen's first wife was called Margaret Laffan and they were married in 1874. She died in 1882 or 83 and he married Marcella Murphy a year later. Margaret was the mother of the three older children. He is down as Eugene Connolly on the parish register for his first marriage to Margaret.

I know from the civil registration of marriage to Marcella that his father's name was Michael, but yet to find anything on his birth or his life pre 1874. I'm guessing that parish registers for that time aren't digitised yet or don't exist.

I saw the same Eugene on the 1911 census in Mitchelstown, but his age is a bit off, so I wasn't sure. I thought that he should have been at least 22 or 23, judging by his birth year.

The Enniscorthy records are on Roots ireland (Roots is slowly adding Wexford parishes). However, I did locate an Owen or Eugene Connolly baptismal record back in the 1840s/1850s. The Enniscorthy parish register is below. The register has a lot of good information that you don't normally find on a parish register. They have deaths from 1815-1880. The parish also had a parish wide census in April 1861 and I believe Owen is there based on a record I saw on Find My Past. I scanned the census quickly but did not find him but you should review and I think you will locate him.

  • Thanks Roger.

I will have a look. If I don't find him, I'm probably going to have to request a copy of his birth certificate from General Register office.

    Regards,
