G'grandfather John Kelly b.1833/34 married c.1869/70 Catherine Cavanagh (or Kavanagh) b.1847/48, and they had two daughters before emigrating to New Zealand in 1874 on the Castle Carrick.  John came from Enniscorthy, son of Ann and John Kelly of 'Kelly's Lorne'.  Ann was know as Lady Ann but whether the reference was heraldy or haughty is debatable!  She was Ann(e) Welsh/Welch or Walsh. The eldest daughter Anne, was born 9 May 1871 at Newtownbarry. The second daughter Bridget was born 10 February 1873 at Old Ross.  The New Zealand connections are well documented but I am seeking further information re their movements & family prior to emigrating.  Any information would be gratefully received.  Thank you.

  • Hi, Firstly I am wondering if "Kelly's Lorne" refers to a place in Wexford?? as I have not come across it before. There are several options about where this couple might have been married, could they have met in Enniscorthy??, if so you have great records at St.Aidan's Cathedral dating way back. Could Ann Have been from BUNCLODY (formerly Newtownbarry) where her first child was christened. It seems the family moved around a bit and John may have had employment that took him from town to town. The name Kavanagh was mostly spelt with a "K" in Wexford. Contact St.Aidan's Cathedral, Enniscorthy (website) and a gentleman named Hugo Kelly may be able to help, you should get John's birth there if he lived in that town. All certs from c.1864 are available at General Register Office, Convent Road, Roscommon (website) also Wexford County Library, Wexford Town, Co.Wexford, and Bunclody Library, (old name Newtownbarry) Co.Wexford will be very helpful in your search. Hope this information is useful to you, Good luck with search, G.B.
