I am looking for Brian Mealy in Griffith's Valuation, in Baldwinstown, County Wexford, Civil Parish of Kilcowan.

Given the many spellings of Mealy, I thought it would be easier to search the townland itself. (I tried several spellings, getting no responses). Griffith's is not letting me search without a surname. Is there any way I can view the people who lived in Baldwinstown and are in the Griffith's Valuation?  Is there any reason Baldwinstown wouldn't be GV eligible?

Thank you for your help.

Ellen

  • Baldwinstown townland and village doesn't appear to be indexed correctly on the AskAboutIreland placename search - you can locate by searching for the county and civil parish instead i.e. Wexford and 'Kilcowan'.

The surnames listed for Baldwinstown are : Sinnott, Quinn, Fortune, Stafford, Butler, Carroll, Furlong, Devraux and Swan, the valuation publication date for this area is 1853.

  • The only Mealy or similar entries I see on Griffith's for County Wexford are much further west (~30km / ~19 miles) around the town of Ballyhack - James Mealey & John Mealy..

Ellen - do you have some details on this Brian Mealy that you could share, what sort of clues do you have on him, your starting point, i.e. type of source, date, location etc ?

  • Hi Shane,

Thanks for offering to help !

Brian Mealy married Mary Neil in Baldwinstown on April 10, 1846. They had four children: Catherine 1844, Anne 1846. John 1848, James 1850. Catherine, Anne and James immigrated in 1866 to USA.  I don't know what became of John.

I believe that Brian's parents were John Mealy and Margaret Power from Ballyhack. If so, Brian was born in 1810 and had siblings Margaret and Patrick.

I can't find Brian in Griffiths. Actually, I can't find anybody from Baldwinstown in Griffiths.!!

And I can't find a death record for Brian, although it may be 1866 when his children immigrate. What are your thoughts on that?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

  • Thank you for the Baldwinstown families that are in Griffiths.  What do you make of the fact that Brian isn't there?  He had a child in 1850 and Griffiths is 1853.  I guess he could have died? Is that a safe conclusion?
