Hello there,

it is my understanding that Askamore is part of the Kilrush parish so I was wondering could someone tell me please how I can get to see the Baptism and marriage records for Askamore church from 1880 onwards.  I know my ancestors were married and baptised there but the relevant Kilrush records are not available on the NLI site.  They stop at 1880 and I have a marriage to find in 1885 and baptisms from 1887 to 1908 to find.  I am hoping that someone will be able to tell me if the records are accessible on microfilm or similar at an archive centre somewhere in Wexford as I'm intending to visit in the summer.

Help with locating these records will be VERY much appreciated.  Thank you loads in advance -  and if anyone has any information re the parents or families of the named people below, that would be WONDERFUL!  :-)

Andrew Browne   and   Julia Butler

I have the civil marriage record of my gt grandparents, Andrew Browne and Julia Butler, marrying at Askamore Church 17th Sept 1885. They then go on to have around 8 children all baptised at Askamore - so I really DO want to seen these records.  I know Andrew and Julia's fathers names are James Browne and William Butler (both farmers) but I don't know their mothers names as I've also not been able to find their baptisms.   If anyone could tell me anything about these Browne and Butler families I'd be SO grateful.

Thank you loads.

Kind regards

Clare Hanlon

    Hello again!

Likely the only place to see the post-1880 register for Askamore would be at the parish. Roots Ireland only has records for about ten of the RC parishes (out of 47) for Co. Wexford and Askamore/Kilrush is not one of the ten.

Why don't you contact the parish? http://www.kilrush-askamore.net/

  • Good morning, just joining the thread if you don't mind as we are also interested in Askamore. My sister and I are trying to locate a baptism for our 3xGGrandfather Mathew Cain who gave Askamore as his place of birth on his Naval records. He was born 16 August 1826.

We know his father was James as per Mathews marriage record to Sarah Willis in Cork as thats where he was based at the time. We have found a James KEANE on the Griffiths records in Askamore showing James probably renting a house on the land, we are assuming the spelling of this surname which as we know changes reguarly to be one of the same.

We can also find no records of any siblings to Mathew, or marriage between a James Keane/Cane/Cain and as we have no Baptism details.....no mothers name.

Does anyone know if the Askamore RC records from the late 1780's onward exist and if so where they might be available to view.

We have already contacted the local parish church on several occasions but have unfortunately to date not had any response. We are visiting Ireland in early July this year in the hopes of discovering more so any guidance would be appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance
